Show KANSAS TOWN IN RUINS five people killed and many injured by a cyclone baxter springs kan july 6 baxter springs was laid in ruins five people were killed and twenty others badly wounded by a cyclone that struck the town about 6 last evening dead SALLIE WEBSTER rL FLORENCE ORENCE WEBSTER RALPH WEBSTER H HIBBS INFANT CHILD OP 01 1 THOMAS SHIELDS scores of men women and children in the town are more or less injured some fatally those reported are mrs neal both collar bones broken and internal injuries james neal head wound and internal injuries roy webster right arm and right hip broken mrs martha smith hip dislocated and internal injuries etta smith internal injuries george A dickey wounds A G hancock serious head wound mrs airs thomas shields fatal internal injuries three members of A sharpes sharpe I 1 a family were badly hurt there seems to have been two currents of wind which struck the town one from the north and the other from the west and they met near the methodist episcopal church joined forces and turned east doing serious damage to property before meeting but affee coming together the destruction was complete in the track ot of the cyclone north the passenger station was the first thing damaged further on much damage was done to residence property shade trees and everything in its way to the west it struck some residences near the freight depot doing serious damage butchen but when it came to the yards lards of the railroad twenty eight freight were and badly damaged the depot was moved off the foundation wrecked about the root roof and the goods and other contents badly flooded the first object struck after the meeting of 0 the currents was the methodist episcopal church this was totally destroyed and it lies a heap ot of ruins the current turned slightly to the southeast doing a good deal of damage until it reached a point just west of J 31 Coope coopers rif large store where it turned directly east striking the store building caving in the west end and badly damaging the root roof the next object ot of the storms fury was an old blacksmith shop which was completely swept away the christian church was directly in the path so it lies like a pile of kindling wood the episcopal church was not touched bed but the storm struck further up the street on the south side clde and from there not a residence escaped KILLED DY LIGHTNING three members of the tha webster family recently tram from nebraska the mother axed aged 60 the daughter aged 20 10 and son aged 4 were killed by lightning another son had bad hla his leg lee broken and his shoulder oll dislocated ted and will probably die 11 II D B hibbs aged 60 died from excitement falling dead in one of the stores on military street the occidental hotel now used as a an opera open house was wag struck by lightning 1 Z k I 1 i I 1 fa N Z 14 r ft and somewhat damaged fo four u r I 1 zi hay barns in the neighborhood ot of tait Z ilk z v fr freight e ight depot were completely wrecked 4 11 A conservative estimate of the damage 1 places it at I there were little it if any cyclone indications cat ions the damage to property properly west of 0 baxter cannot be fully determined it Is reported ted that tor for many miles in the track of the storm that fences and barns are blown down and crops damaged in the west part of lyon township the country seems to have had a touch of perhaps the same twister that the I 1 little town of baxter had it struck the farmhouse farm house of thomas shields of lyon mrs afro shields and her two children were in the barn at the time the storm struck and one a ot f the children a year old baby girl was killed the older childs leg was broken and mrs afro shields had her shoulder dislocated and Is injured in her back and I 1 spine she will die one or two other farms in the immediate vicinity ut of mr were damaged W L archer was found dead on the nolan farm in sheridan township ile he left mccue yesterday afternoon at 4 where he be had been on business I 1 it Is supposed he was drowned while crossing a creek forty miners at work in mine no 47 of 0 the kansas texas coal company at weir city had no knowledge of the storm until the mine was deluged deluge W with h f the torrents ot of water from abo above e A all I 1 1 had narrow escapes and every mule in the mine clr s was drowned the rain was the most violent ever I 1 known resembling a cloudburst and the entire country was flooded reports of further fatalities seem almost 0 certain when the roads are opened up |
