Show SALT AIR BOULEVARD 4 Surveyors Will Begin at it ToMorrow To-Morrow WEST TEMPLE STREET RAILROAD Metropolitan Stone Companys Paving Stone Is Equal to the Lest Quarried in Colorado A boulevard from this city to the Great Salt Lake will be begun tomorrow On Wednesday Matthew White drove 4 President Wilford Woodruff and George Q Cannon to Saltair Although the latter is president of the new Saltair company and Wilford Woodruff a largo owner of tho stock it was their first visit to their new possessions Mr White invited them to I I view the interior of his steamboat cottage cot-tage and the unique arrangement struck the disnilied gentlemen as a very happy adaptation A lunch which lasted an hour was served during which i Mr White revealed his plans of n boulevard to the lake I I The drive to the lake over the present road I is something frightful and when President Woodruff alighted i at tho lake he was coy ii crea with dust from head to foot This a naturally put him in n frame of mind to j r hearken with patience to any scheme cal J culated to provide a better road to Saltair The county court has established all rod roadway on a line with North Temple street to Saltair Mr White elaborated on the plan of a I I boulevard first suggested by TUE HERALD to consist of a macadamized road for muddy weather and a dirt road Tor fast I driving during the dry season A I strip also to be reserved for i tho extension of tho street cars both the Salt Lake rapid transit companies i being anxious to do that if either can secure sin exclusive franchise The plan includes two rows of shade trees on either side of the driveway it being estimated that the water for irrigating these can be pumped out of the Jordan river and carried to tho lake in open ditches i It was decided that the work of grading 4 the boulevard should begin at Saltair and be pushed toward this city To superintend superin-tend the work Mr White will remain at Steamboat cottage for the next month giving the improvements his personal direction di-rection Mr White also submitted his plans for a pier and pavilion The forjier is to be i 2OO feet long with bath rooms under the Door of the pier so that the bathers can I step directly into the water without the usual parade along the shore in full view of the spectators which keeps a great many modest people away The pavilion will be two stories high the first floor 125x125 devoted to dancing The upper floor will have an opening similar simi-lar to the large river steamboats and the 1 cabin space will be utilized for restaurant purposes while the sides will be divided into small bedrooms after the pattern of berths on a steamer I |
