What Ho Asks I T6 tho Editor of THE HERALD Is this a free land where a man has to be worth 10000 to pass from one state to another If a law had been passed by our Congressmen prohibiting foreign pauper labor from landing on our shores which has been going on for over fifty years it would be more sensible than passing a law prohibiting men whom the avarice and tyranny of eastern capi talists have reduced to poverty from bettering tering themselves by going to a part of the country where they can obtain enough food to keep their wives and children from starving They call them paupers If they are paupersit is the fault of the capitalist and not their fault It was the capitalists who passed the bill demonetizing silver in 1873 which has justly gained for itself the name of the crime of 73 J for a more unjust un-just bill could not have been passed Since its passage the laboring people of America have gradually been trampled down by the avaricious plunderings of the capitalists until now the limit has been reached After they have thrown hundreds of thousands of men out of employment em-ployment and when these men try to get to a part of the country where they can make the ground produce enough for themselves and families they are called paupers and not allowed to enter the state of Missouri That state knew nothing of this law prohibiting pauper labor from entering the state until a time when they should have opened their doors to the men who are out of employment and offered to assist as-sist them But then they find this law and close their doors to a people which need their assistance When there was a famine in Russia Missouri was one of the heaviest contributors but when American people need her assistance she closes her doors to them entirely The laboring people of America are a set of people who bear their burden uncomplainingly un-complainingly until it gets to be more than they can bear then they strike their oppressors with such tremendous force that it sends them reeling backward This was proven in the revolutionary war and now the load is about all that this people can bear and if the laboring people are not put on a level with the capitalist and a bill passed making silver money again some morning America will wake up and find that twenty of her states and territories have seceded and she will also find that the laboring class will make the very best soldiers possible to obtain YOUNG WESTERNER PARK CITY July 301893 We print the foregoing so that our laboring friends may not thinK we desire to close our columns against them as Kansas City has closed her gates against Denver workmen But we assure our friends that such expressions will do their cause no good Nor will the cause of silver be aided by threats of secession They only block the way and hinder what the writer desires to effect Every city has the right of selfprotection Secession is played out All talk of trying to force or alarm the country with a free silver policy is worse than useless It is wrong as well as futile Sympathy for the suffering and desire to ameliorate the condition of the laboring classes whether in or out ot work is not to be created or increased by such remarks awe a-we have permitted this once to appear ap-pear over the signature of Young Westerner Ed Only tight to Tell The Rev Mark Guy Pearre the eminent emin-ent English divine writes 1
