Show llooser 8 Cnthbertsons Plans for the Joint Bnlldlnsr The plan of Mooser Cuthbertson consists con-sists of two wings one devoted to the city and the other to the county being about 150 foot apart with corridors leading to both from a central entrance and tower I which forms with the record hall a central cen-tral group which will be constructed fire proof and isolated from the main corridors by fireproof doors The basement is aboveground above-ground and this forms as healthy and pleasant offices as those above As proposed pro-posed by the design submitted the whole surface of the building site will be covered by a thick layer of concrete about the only way that a good foundation can be obtained on the soft ground of which the Eighth ward square is mode The foundation walls up to the surface of the ground will bo composed of concrete a nonabsorbent of moisture in that respect far superior to brick aud stone which absorb ab-sorb moisture readily The outside and main walls of the superstructure super-structure will le made of brick faced with stone and the roof of tiles Plenty of light end air and no dark corners are characteristics character-istics of the plan There are no dark offices offi-ces and the corridors in almost all instances in-stances run clear through the building from end to end and got light from the most effective pointsthe ends In the matter of entrances and exits this plan is also well considered Besides the grand main staircase common to both wings in the central tower both city and county have two separate staircases and besides these are small private staircases where necessary The rooms arc all of ample size fully coming up to the standard required by the committee As may be seen from the above engraving engrav-ing the plan lends itself to the making of a noble looking facade well proportioned and making most of tho magnificent plat of round devoted to its orection It also emphasizes the fact that the build i ing Is devoted to two different purposes county and municipal offices by each build ing being distinct ng and easily recognized as entirely separate no sign boards being required re-quired to indicate which is which The style is Romanesque which lends itself to grand masonic effects suitable for a public building Economy of expense is one of the marked i features of Messrs Moosor Cuthbert sons plan thewhole exterior being of un dressed stone with almost an entire absence ab-sence of moldings and carvings The effect is got by the artistic grouping of masses and not by petty details |
