Show THE FAST VAMOOSE She Makes Meat of the Famous Mary Powell SHE GOES PAST THE NEW YORK Editor Hearsts New Yacht Plays with the Fastest Boats on the Hudson Sailing all Around Them with Ease Special THE HEOATJ Examiner Dlspatonl NEW YORK I2The Horreschoff high speed yacht Vamoose had another brush with a fast steamboat Friday and came out of it with flying colors After the contest con-test of last Saturday with the Monmonth there were some people who said that the Mary Powell was a faster boat than the Monmouth To see whether they were I right or not Mr Hearst the owner of the 1 Vamoose determined to give the speedy Hifdson river boat a runi All the morning morn-ing papers have long accounts of the race In its story the Recorder says The I haughty colors of the Mary Powell were lowered l yesterday and sho can no longer pose as queen of Hudson river W R Hearsts sleek and swift Vamoosa gave her the worst beating she ever sustained in the course of her long and memorable career Of course the Mary Powell was not racing These river steamers all have too much rver al regard re-gard for the safety of their passengers to indulge in such frivolous amusement but the pent up steam issuing at frequent intervals from her safety valves indicated that although she might not be racing she was at any rate goingasfastasaparticular kind of coal bought specially for the specialy occasion occa-sion could drive her Passengers on the Mary Powell said the Vamoose looked just like her name and they were right She resembled the French flea first she was seen ana then she wasnt snnn Ten minutes after the boats were abreast and the race begun the Vamoose crossed the Mary Powells bows and soon was 300 yards ahead The news of a race against the Mary Powell had been flashed the river up That this was so was ovi denced by the crowds that lined the docks as tho racers swept by I is no use to say that thero was no contest for it was too ovident Now D big and memorable feat occurred A little more steam was allowed in the cylinders until the gauge registered 240 pounds leaving ten pounds in reserve The Vamoose crossed the bows of the Mary Powell l and darting over to the Now Jersey side with her helm hard astarboard do scribed a semicircle Her object was to show how much faster sho was The Vamoose lost nearly a mile by this maneuvering man-euvering but she broke the record Never before had tho Powell been treated so Powel unceremoniously un-ceremoniously The Vamoose passed heron her-on the starboard side and three minutes later is was away ahead of her at this time the Mary Powells safety valves were pung forth steam After this the Mary Powell ceased to be an incident in the race All hands looked for other field to conquer Another contestant came to the front at about this time It was in the shape of a passenger train on the line that skirts the I starboard bank of the Hudson bound I Albanyward The train and the Vamoose I left Riyerdalo together The yacht beat the train to Yonkers Thus the Vamoose beat not only the Mary Powell but also a I I raiway train 111 HpntI ht W uu went up the river as far as Hastings by whiah time the Mary Powell was almost hull down astern Coniing back she had a brush with the New York one of the Albany boats a craft with three funnels and well known to be I laster than the Mary Powell The Vamoose described a semicircle round her stern and caught her within short order The New York made a stop at Yonkers and so deprived de-prived the Vamoose of the honor of an authoritative victory chronicled by watches registered half an hour The Vamoose however clearly demonstrated the New York was quite as much her mutton as was tho Mary Powell This was the first time the vamoose trst carried car-ried 240 pounds of steam Tho captain of the Mary Powell declared that he had never raced But ttio fact is historic that the Powell reached her first stopping place forty minutes in advance of her usual time This was said to be owing to the tide The World has over acolumn account of the race and this is the headlines Steamed all round her Mr Hearsts yacht Vamoose beats the Mary Powell Ran ahead crossed cros-sed her bows gave a stern chase and won again Then the aquatic racer challenged a Hudson river railroad train and left it behind from Yonkers to Hastings running at twentysix mles an hour the tastest boat in the world is the belief of experts And here is the first paragraph of a column and a half article in the Herald Talk about your Teutonics and your Majesties Majes-ties they would not have been in it with W R Hearsts cyclonic little wonder wih Vamoose When she raced against that famous old river steamer the Mary Ppwell yesterday afternoon on what some people call the American Danube or what is generally known as Hudson river not only did the Vamoose beat the Mary Powell but she did what no other boat has done before or oven attempted at-tempted and that was to steam completely around her Incidentally she beat one of the local passenger trains to Yonkers and r ootiooHv wnllnnnfl the New York nf the Albany Day line in a run from Hastings to Yonkers the Now York fortunately for herself stopping there to land passengers I pas-sengers The Sun has a couple of columns about the race which begins thus Likea tiny demon crowned with flowing Jocks of sooty hair which the wind tossed victoriously behind the Vamoose danced all around the swift Mary Powell yesterday on tie Hudson Hud-son I was a defiant race too for there was a dignity in the way the speedy steam yacht tossed her head about tho waves whenever she settled down to real work In short the Vamoose started ont yester day to beat the Mary Powell on her trip I up the Hudson She loitered by her side I as though fearful of tbe contest at first and then burst ahead gleefully as though laugh ing at the Powells clumsiness She darted from side to side in front of the big steamboat and circled clear around her Her sharp bow spelled out the word de feat in clear letters behind On either side and in front of her I big antagonist and at length to Hastings when the Powells discomfiture was more I than complete she put about and darted I I away without even a salute to try and find fnd a worthier antagonist Then the Vamoose j I started in for some fun There was a local passenger train from New York abreast on the New York Central road I was made up of four cars and had easily passed tho I Powell when i caught up to the Vamoose the yacht started up again Again her stern sank nearly into the water and again the smoke blackened a her firemen I shovelled new supplies of soft coal into her furnaces The yacht and passenger had it nip and tuck from Rlverdalo to Yonkers I where tho train stopped I was a close brush won but the merry flier of the waters I I |
