Show A WEAK INVENTION Tho proposition to make CLEVELAND governor of New York as proof of his ability to carry tho state President appears ap-pears to be a weak invention of some of his enemies The question would be not upon his election to the gubernatorial chair but bis nomination for that place The people of New York are his friends by a large majority but the politicians who carry primaries and conventions arc divided di-vided and rs it would be understood that the defeat the oxPresident for the state ofilco would mean his permanent retirement the utmost efforts would be put forth to compass that end by Tammany and hostile organizations in a few socalled strongholds strong-holds The New York World which is the godfather of the scheme ic question is not too friendly to the man who convoyed word to the editor to wait when the latter lat-ter sent up his calling card Now it is true that Mr CLEVELANDS candidacy rests upon the assumption that hois the first choice of the Now York Democracy though ot course did he fail to receive the full vote of the delegation in the national convention it would be a serious ser-ious blow to the expectations and desires of his friends We think the case is mare serious against him in the west and for exactly ex-actly the reasons that should make him strong in New York and the moneylending states of tho east However it was our I purpose in this article to refer only to the plan of making Mr CLEVELAND a candidate for governor which we think is absurd I |
