Show TWO BLACK FIENDS They Criminally Assault a Mother and Daughter t I I THE HUSBAND DROPS DOWN DEAD When He Ses the Senseless Form of His Wife The Girl Succeeded In Saving Herself Special I to THE HERALD Examiner DlspatchJ I SANDT HILL N Y Aug 13This = whole region is in a turmoil of excitement over an assault committed Tuesday night by two negroes upon Mrs Mary Cook and f her daughter the wife and child of a justice of the peace of Wilton a village across the Hudson ton miles from here 4 > and equally distant from Saratoga and tho sudden death of Justice Cook resulting i from the horrible crime Justice Oscar I Cook was a welltodo farmer of Wilton i about 45 years of age Tuesday Mrs Cook < and her daughter drove to Does Corners i i for household supple They were expected ex-pected back at S pm About that hour Justice Cook while talking with two neighbors neigh-bors in his C yard noticed two negroes driv Inc past in a buggy Soon afterward the trio were startled by a womans scream npoated again and again My God cried Mr Cook that is Marys voice I must go to her nelp Tho throe men ran up the road and half a mile from tho house 1 they found Mr Cooks team the vehicle empty and the horse In the tangled harness j har-ness The negroes were seen to enter the 1 buggy and drive away Mr Cook called I for his wife and caughter frantically but no response came Then a search a made and evidences of i a struggle where a fence had been torn aown were found by tho road ditch A little lit-tle further on Mr Cook stumbled over the Insensible body of his wife lying in some underbrush When the three mon carried the woman into the road she was alive but unable to speak a word Her clothing a torn fromher body and everything Indicated Indi-cated that she had been illtreated in the most inhuman manner This was more i than the husband could stand Boys I cant see I he exclaimed and then with a groan he fell to the ground a corpse The I senseless body of Mrs Cook who was supposed sup-posed to be dying and the lifeless body of I Her husband were lifted into the wagon waon land taken to the Cook homestead All this Al I ime there were no tidings of the daughter Miss Carrie a comely girl of sixteen A t party of the neighbors started in search of her with lanterns In less than an hour I they returned with the girl almost bereft of her senses Sho was found hiding the roods From her was learned the particulars partic-ulars of the outrage When the negroes met the women in the highway they pulled ap their horses one of them seized the team driven by the women while his companion dragged Mrs Cook from her wagon Miss I barrio seized an umbrella and dealt the miscreant a blow and thrust it into his face Then the fellow who Had held the horses attacked the girl The contest was unequal and to save herself from a fate worse than death the girl rushed wildly through the underbrush The negro par sued her but she hid until the searching arty found her later Her clothing wa3 nearly all torn from her and she was mere deal than alive when help came The Saratoga chief of police was notified of the crime and a hunt was immediately begun Yesterday about noon the men vere found at tho house of George Van fcmkin wellknown and respectable colored man of this place They were at once covered with revolvers shackled and parched to cells m the court house Later hey were taken to Saratoga A number of of bloody handkerchiefs were found o the arson of one of the negroes and he car ned an ugly wound near one of his eyes made no doubt with the point of the um irella wielded by the young girl who fought so valiantly for her honor and that of her aothtr At last accounts Mrs Cook was I unable to speak and was in a precarious condition |
