Show The Hum of Electricity Twentyfourth street was a scene of great activity yesterday And from the i operations going on there a person would suppose that electric railways wore something i some-thing of the immediate future Early yesterday morning the Ogden Street railway company or the Jarvis Conklin people began grading and laying a double track railway on Twentyfourth 1 street with forty men employed All day I Manager H C Gilbert was increasing the force and up to last evening fully three hundred men were using picks and shovels between Washington and Wall avenues The work was kept up all night with an extra force of several hundred men and by morning there was double track of street railway in perfect condition from the Union depot on Wall avenue to Twenty fourth street and from Wall to Washington Washing-ton avenue The JarvisConklin company expect to keep the dirt flying in other portions of the city and get the electric cars started in the main portions of the city as soon as possible pos-sible The JarvisConklin company are aware that the opposing company have a franchise to erect lines of railway on the same thoroughfares it thor-oughfares and they are making an extra 1 effort to gain possession of the unoccupied streets in the central portion of the city The movements in street railway circles yesterday removes the anxiety that has existed ex-isted with interested citizens for some time past It will take much longer than some people peo-ple imagine to get the system which will cover over twenty miles of rails in running nrdr Riit nvfirvthinf is tn hn first rlnsss The cars will be ithe most modern pattern pat-tern aifil willbe almost noiseless The machinery ma-chinery to be placed in the mammoth powerhouse power-house which is about to be erected will be costly and the very best that can be produced pro-duced The JarvisConklin company have an enormous en-ormous amount of money expended around und in the city of Ogden Within the last sixty days they have purchased several hundred thousand dollars worth of real estate at good figures which they cannot i afford to let lay idle and unimproved long Prom all appearances they mean to do something great for the future welfare of Ogden of which fact the citizens of the Junction city aro to be congratulated What course the Henderson company who have several miles of track laid will pursue remains yet to be seen |
