Show Decor Score A 21st century bedroom By BARBARA HARTUNG Copley News Service Q. I'm tired of my traditional tradi-tional maple bedroom furniture furni-ture and I have put it in my guest room. I want a completely com-pletely new look modern and dramatic. D.P.M. A. Bedroom furnishings are beginning to move into the 21st century, combining function and aesthetics. Certainly one of the most spectacular modern beds available is Namaco's platform plat-form bed wth gleaming metallic me-tallic base, highlighted by 300 watts of light recessed underneath a catilevered edge and sporting a plush, channel-quilted spread. It could be a smashing thing to start with. Uncover your floors or replace re-place the carpet with gleaming gleam-ing vinyl in a solid, shiny design. de-sign. Replace traditional draperies dra-peries with brilliantly colored col-ored or metallic finished horizontal Venetian blinds. Flank the sleek, low bed with bookselves for your treasures and create an interesting in-teresting focal point over the head of the bed with an important piece of art, a wall hanging or a quilted fabric "mural." Q. I have French provincial provin-cial furniture in my town-house. town-house. I have recently bad new tile put down on the floor throughout. The walla are wood paneled with a whitewash to lighten them. What sort of rugs would look best? T.P. A. It is hard to know if you want a dramatic, robust look or a more restrained feeling. If your tile is terra-cotta and you want farmhouse informality, in-formality, Oriental rugs or Persians with deep rich color would be charming. If, however, you prefer a more restrained look, you might consider an Aubusson or Savonnerie style. These types of rugs are art in themselves. Coordinate your rug's colors col-ors so your furniture reflects a well-planned approach. If the rug is richly patterned, play down pattern in your upholstery and vice versa. If authentic Persian, Aubusson or Savonnerie rugs are beyond your budget, check the better department stores in your area for good reproductions. A wide variety varie-ty of rugs are available today, inspired by the original origi-nal styles of the Orient and ' Europe but keyed to less generous budgets. Q. I have a breakfast room which is actually a nook off my kitchen. I have gold-mottled vinyl on the floor. I have bought a white ice cream set, a table and two chairs. What should I choose to cover a series of three 36-by-40-inch windows across one wall? I am tired of curtains. I want the room to be bright and cheery and still blend with the kitchen which has the same gold floor and-natural and-natural fruitwood cabinets. - NJI.F. A. Simple window shades in gold would be nice trimmed with several rows of white braid. Choose heavy vinyl shades so that they'll be substantial and easy to wipe clean. They are functional func-tional and not terribly expensive. ex-pensive. Add wallpaper in a gold and white and another color or two if you want more going on in the room. Or paint the walls a pale gold. If the wallpaper you choose has a coordinated t fabric, you might laminate some fabric to the window shades so the shades will blend into the walls. |
