HUETINQ THEMSELVES Those Hungarians and Italians In the Pennsylvania coke regions who are trying to bring their employers to terms by using dynamite cartridges to intimidate the bosses and by resisting with force tho offi cers of the law are simply speeding the day when Hungarian and Italian laborers will cease to come to America for employment employ-ment as nobody here will hire them I is fast being impressed upon employers that it is not good policy to hire cheap labor which is unreliable and that it is mighty costly business to hire criminals at any price The managers of some of the coke companies have said since tho strike has been on that it would DO much cheaper to pay 25 per cent higher wages to reliable trustworthy men than to continue with these fellows who aro never contented and who are almost certain to strike just at the timo when their going out will be most annoying and most costly to the employers Tho operators will win in the present contest tho foolish men being forced into accepting their terms or driven out of tho district This result Is inevitable as tho struggle now is between the state and the strikers rather than between be-tween the latter and the operators and the state will necessarily be victorious And yet tho triumph of the employers will be an expensive one costing the companies more as pne of the bosses expresses ex-presses It ttfaa it would havjTcostJI flood men had been hired and their wages been 25 per cent higher than the foreigners demand de-mand One of these days the big employing employ-ing concerns will learn that in the long run it is cheaper to hire good men at fair wages such wages as good men can afford to work I for than to employ tho cheap fellows who are ever causing trouble and whoso argument in their disputes is violence viol-ence and destruction It will belwell for the country when employers learn this fact for then the human cattle which flock hither from the other side of the ocean will be checked and the American community be spared these little wars which are being be-ing waged in one section or another all the time and which are invariably conducted on one side by ignorant brutal foreigners II I I
