Show GRACIOUS BUT GKOIKSQUE We clip this paragraph from the Salt Lithe Tribune There a great many people who think It would be a gracious act on the part Qf Mayor V Bas In to reappoint reap-point J C Conklin as a member of the board of public works He understands un-derstands the place and we believe the only crime he ever committed was in running for mayor V Now compare that with this also copied from the Tribune Salt Lake City Nov 21 1893 To A N Cherry Heber M Wells and William H Lett board of canvassers canvas-sers Salt Lake city Utah Sirs You will please take notice that the undersigned an elector and taxpayer of the city and county of Salt Lake hereby files notice of contest of the election of Robert N Baskin who was a candidate for the office of mayor of Salt Lake city Utah territory at the election held on the 7th day of November Novem-ber 1893 I Said contest will be based upon statutory grounds and you are hereby here-by notified to preserve the ballots cast and the poll books and poll lists used and made at said election as the same will be required on the hearing of said contest J C CONKLIN Very gracious indeed would be such an act as recommended by the Conklin gobetween would it not But how much sense would there be in it And how can the mayor appoint Mr I Conklin to the position which he resigned re-signed as a candidate for the mayor I ship while he is still contending for that office If he is still in the race for the latter he is ineligible for his former place If he is eligible for appointment ap-pointment he is ineligible for election Mayor Baskin may be gracious but he is not such a fool as to take the fool advice of our wonderfully wise 1 contdmporary The grounds on which Mr Conklin contests the election for the mayor ship do not appear We are of the opinion that there are none but merely mere-ly some airy notions and insubstantial allegations wherewith the late Liberal chief intends to present the form of a legal fight and keep himself before the public Anyhow Conklins willingness willing-ness to accept the appointment suggested sug-gested would be a virtual acknowledgment acknow-ledgment that his struggle for the elective office is a vain pretence |
