Show CLARKSON ON SILVUH Ho Favors the Free Coinage of the American Ameri-can Product A HERALD reporter ran up against General Clarkson in front of the Knuts ford last evening The general was attired at-tired in a swallow tail and waiting for Colonel Ike Trumbo who soon came sailing sail-ing alone in his black cape coat and highly polished SHE nat During the few moments that intervened inter-vened THE HERALD man was busy at work questioninc General Clarkson on tho silver question When asked if Congress would repeal the Sherman act without getting any thing in return Mr Clarkson said emphatically em-phatically C No It is a silver Senate and a silver House you might as well demonetize corn in my state Iowa as silver out here If it was attempted to yay by leg islation that wheat is the only breadstuff legally fit to eat the raisers of corn would have something to say would they not I have always been in favor of the two metals In 1890 we offered the west free coinage for the American product It was discussed at a dinner at which Senator Hiscock was present Senator Jones was offered free coinage but refused to accept it unless it was made universal For myself my-self I am opposed to laying this country open to all the coinage of the world Thl silver men refused free coinage to take care of the product of India and now India has gone back on the white metal I cannot understand this action of the Indian government The policy that I favor is one that takes care of American products I am opposed to this country consulting Europe as to its money policy We never asked it if we should be a free country and I am opposed to going to it now to get its permission as to the kind of money we shall have Neither gold nor silver are the best kind of money No man would care to be paid 1000 in silver to carry with him neither would he desire de-sire to be paidin gold |
