Show BRIBING THE TERRITORIES With a brief comment THE HERALD yes rday guoted a paragraph from the St lOuis GlobeDemocrat referring to the Democratic tendencies of the territory of New Mexico as a bar to its admission to the union as a state The Republicans always consider it fine humor to twit their opponents with nagging references to their own tyrannical course They like to see Democrats wince under the Republican lash to play with them as a cat does with a mouse which it knows is in her power and to tantalize them with jocular allusions to Republican audacity Of course everybody knows that New Mexico has not been admitted because to admit her would place two Democrats in the United States Senate and one in the House of representatives Wyoming and Idaho together have a smaller population than New Mexico but they promised not to send any Democrats to Washington and they were allowed to come into the galaxy of states whilst the other was refused The behavior of the Republican party towards the west in the matter of admit ting new states forms an interesting episode in its unique and at the same time aried history That party wanted not only > more votes in the electoral college but above all it wanted the numerical strength in Congress to raise the war tariff for the additional protection of the astern manufacturers They wanted to dispose of the 100000000 surplus left by the CLEVELAND administration They wanted further reductions of the internal revenue taxes They wanted more pensions pen-sions They wanted heavy ocean mail subsidies sub-sidies They wanted a big navy All this and more they wanted so that they could put the duty up ont clothing agricultural mplements carpets tinplate cotton ties binding twine hardware coal boots and shoes etc and drive away all competition with the home producers Hitherto the western Republicans had been among the most subservient tools of the monopolists but whether or no they continued so in their intentions it was known that the iron i rule of king caucus would crush out anything in the shape of convictions they might gain from contact with the people In this way with at least implied pledges to carry out the behests of the tariffites six states were railroaded into the union during the pendency of tho McKINLEY bill And if Now Mexico and Utahone with a population of 144 S63 and tho other of 206493 had given 1 the same pledges they too would have been admitted on the same terms as Idaho with 84229 and Wyoming with 60559 No need as in the case of Utah for pretexts based on a former domestic do-mestic conditionthe excuse made by the GlobeDemocrat with respect to New Mexico is enough and besides has tho merit of candor It will be to the everlasting disgrace of the newlymade states that they bought their way into the union with their Congressional Con-gressional votes for a measure whose true intent and meaning are to perpetuate the power of the tariff monopolists Utah can well afford to remain outside maligned and slandered rather than deface her escutcheon escut-cheon with a degradation like this Much as her citizens of all political parties would be benefitted by statehood she does not need to bow th knee obsequiously to the ty ranuy that foirsted upon the country this latest scheme to rob the people For the whole history of lawmaking in Republican can governments may be challenged to produce pro-duce a parallel to the arbitrary and despot measures adopted to carry the MCKINLEY bill from its inception in the room of the house committee on ways and means through the different Republican caucuses the change of rules made necessary to ga the minority to its appearance in the house and its final passage under whip and spur A padlocked house a padded Senate and a packed President formed the triple alliance al-liance the drefbund of the protectionist The first innings of the people occurred last November but they are not to be the last |
