Show Steve Beyer Knows What He Wants To Be Life isn't all roses for the willbacker though, "the hardest har-dest thing is on the quick pitch when I get cracked down on by the outside receiver. You don't even see him coming and if the corner back doesn't yell you get leveled." IT CAN be fun though, especially espe-cially when the blitz call is made. Steve had several sacks in the Highland win which is a linebackers dream. When not blitzing Steve is covering the curl on pass plays. Thus far he has at least one pass deflection a game plus a couple of interceptions inter-ceptions to his credit. Steve was also the starting third baseman for the state championship baseball team, sonething he thinks about at times. "The team as a whole has never said anything about comparison between the two teams, but individually I've thought to myself that if we can come from behind in baseball and win like we did we can do it in football." TO THIS 5' 10" 155 pound senior this years football team has a little different attitude over last years. "It seemed like last year the players were always complaining about each other. We play together and get along. We know if the line does their job then the backs will do theirs. We kid each other alot but we play together as well." Steve enjoys all sports but he also has another hobby he likes. "I took leather class in seventh grade and it's stayed with me. I like to make belts and things with leather." He also likes to hunt anything that moves. FEW KNOW about life after high school, but Steve has his head on. "I know I can't make a living at sports and it's more important to me to get my schooling. I've got to move on in life." For the time being though he's happy to be part of the Braves team and looks forward for-ward to baseball. Then it's up, up and away. Hopefully. ' If By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Most high school students don't know what they want out of life, but Steve Beyer of Bountiful isn't one of them. "ALL MY life I've wanted to be a pilot. After graduation 1 plan to go to the Air Force Academy to start my schooling in that direction." By the way he wouldn't mind playing sports for the Cadets either. Steve is the starting Will Linebacker for the league leading lead-ing the Bountiful side, a position posi-tion he had to learn after his sophomore season. FOOTBALL began at age 8 for Steve who started out as quarterback in those days. "I had a pretty good arm so the coaches put me there. 1 think I was good, anyway I loved playing the position especially throwing the ball." By the time he reached junior high though he was a running back and defensive back something he also played as a sophomore at Bountiful. "AFTER MY sophomore year Coach Waite asked me if I would switch to the linebacker spot and I said fine." You see he had been knocked out of the starting running back spot by Todd Smith, "it didn't really bother me because Smitty is a pretty good back. I realized I was too slow, I'm quick reacting react-ing but my times in the 40 and 100 could definitely come down" he joked. The move to weak side linebacker line-backer was love at first game for Steve. "It was fun. The line would protect us from blockers and I used to just wait for the runner and then hit him." SINCE HIS move to that spot though he has only seen action on offense one game. Last year against Highland all the junior running backs were starting for the varsity so Steve got to run one more time for old time sake. |
