special to the Sun says Formal charges of the gravest character have been preferred again Most Rev Michael Augustine Corrigan Cor-rigan Roman Catholic archbishop of New Yorlc by a brother prelate of his grade in New York He is accused by the Most Rev John Dearland Archbishop of St Paul of having engaged in an unlawful conspiracy to weaken or undermine the effect of the popes decisions in respect to the church in respect to matters in America and having had recourse to methods unbecoming a bishop and designed de-signed to discredit and disgrace Archbishop Arch-bishop Ireland and Monsigneur Satolli These charges were duly formulated and are now on their way to Rome where they will be presented to the highest tribunal tri-bunal in the Roman Catholic church That tribunal has power to pass upon the accusationsand fix the punishment of the accused they be sustained If Archbishop Corrigan be found guilty as charged his fate as well as the future great province of New York over which he has so long presided will become the object of eager surmise Should the charges fail the consequences can scarcely be less serious to Archbishop Ireland nor will the consequences in either case be limited to the provinces of New York and St Paul The difference between Archbishop Ireland Ire-land and Archbishop Corrigan are of longstanding long-standing The partners of Archbishop Corrigan in the conspiracy are now alleged priests of his immediate entourage notably Father Michael Joseph Lavelle rector of St Patricks cathedral who was especially named by Archbishop Ireland as a conspirator conspi-rator and possibly Father Gerardo Er rante Archbishop Italian secretary sec-retary It is said other priests ure involved in-volved As regards Archbishop Corrigan there is documentary evidence which will be produced against the 1 distingushed prelate and if they are interpreted aright by Archbishop Corrigans accusers they prove the existence of a conspiracy of which the archepiscopal residence in Madison avenue is the center and which extended in numerous ramifications ramifica-tions throughout America into France and Italy and even to the shadow of St Peters itself Continuing the article says Upon the arrival of Manager Satolli it was for the time supposed the differences between Archbishops Ireland and Corrigan were ended and friends of Archbishop Ireland felt elated Then came rumblings of dissent dis-sent from the Corrigan faction An an nonymous letter with disagreeable insinuations insin-uations regarding Monseignor Satolh was published in the daily press The storm of indignation reached the climax when Father McGlynn was restored It was soon learned so the article says that Archbishop Corrigan was sending anonymous letters to be published in Chi cao criticising Archbishop Ireland and his views Letters dated in Philadelphia will suffice to say that Archbishop Corrigans Philadelphia article speedily found a magnet attracting to itself a considerable mass of other documentary and verbal evidence bearing upon the same case in very mucn the same way The laymen whom the archbishop of New York honored with his confidence proved not to be only a Roman Catholic citizen of Chicago whom it deemed desirable to enlist in the antiIreland propaganda At length the friends ofthe ArchDisuop of St Paul became convinced that Archbishop Arch-bishop Corrigan was the center of the propaganda whose purpose it is to dis credit Archbishop Ireland in the estimation estima-tion of Roman Catholics of America and the Vatican and create such alarm at the Vatican as may result in the recall of Mon seignor Satolli and a reversal of the popes expressed policy in respect to religious education in America Representatives of this journal found very little trouble in gaining the confidence confi-dence of Liberal persons who within two or three weeks past have received re-ceived more or less direct proofs that Archbishop Corrigans trust in his own persuasiveness and antipathy anti-pathy to scholartic thought and practice which is supposed to be represented by I Archbishop Ireland and Monseignor Sa I tolli The letters do not have the signature of Bishop Corrigan but they are signed by Father Michael Joseph Lavelle of St Patricks cathedral New York They appeal to various addresses to use such influence as they have to secure publication in the press both secular and religious of articles protesting against the unfortunate influence influ-ence obtained by Archbishop Ireland at Rome and against Monseignor Satollis interference in American Catholic affairs which is described as offensive and annoying an-noying McGlynn Goes to Rome NEW YORK Jan 8A morning paper will say Dr Edward McQlynn will go to Rome The statement is authoritative and bears out the announcement made at the time of his suspension He was removed re-moved by Monseignor Satolli |
