Show JACKSON DAY The New York Business Men s Democratic Demo-cratic Club Celebrate An Eloquent Speech by Congressmnn Breckeixridsje of Kentucky Tribute to the President Elect f NEW YORK Dec 7 The Business Mens Democratic association of New York celebrated Jackson Day today by a banquet at Delmonicos Over two I hundred members of the association were present besides a number of distinguished Democrats from all over the coun i try President J Edward Simpson I Simp-son presided On his right sat Congressman William C P Breckenridge of Kentucky and on his left William F Harrity chairman of the Democratic national na-tional committee Other guests were ex Governor Campbell of Ohio Congressman Harter of Ohio Hon O R Potter Hon Charles P McClelland Hon James Hunter Hon William Brown and Hon William T McMahon The president at i 9 oclock introduced Congressman Breck enridge who fid From Jefferson to Jackson our I > residents resi-dents were men of the highest character but none touched the popular heart None could in any sense of the word be leader I submit that the quality of Jefferson and Jackson reappeared in Abraham Lincoln and is possessed by Grover Cleveland It is not in opinions held not in acts done not in utterances added for no four men were less alike than all these but in the profound belief of their fellow citizens that those opinions and acts and utterances sprang from a sincere love of common good and pure desire to give the country service withouta trace of personal selfseeking To Mr Cleveland came the opportunity opportu-nity of the century He came like Jefferson Jeffer-son to reestablish the principles of the constitution He came like Jackson to use the powers of his office to carry out the will of the people without fear or favor without personal prejudice or passion and as a leader of all Democrats was chosen chief of a great and successful party and thereby will be president of the wholepeople Other speakers were exGovernor Campbell Camp-bell of Ohio Congressman Hurter of Ohio and Hon James I Ford Massachusetts Democracy BOSTON Jan 7The annual Jackson dinner of the Massachusetts Democracy was held at the American House this afternoon About 350 representative members of the party were present The dinner was preceded by an informal reception re-ception in the hotel parlors Josiah Quincy chairman of the committee presided pre-sided and with him at the speakers table sat Governor Russell and others Those who spoke were Governor Russell and Charles S Hamlin Honoring Old Hickory LOUISVILLE Jan 7rhe Watterson club celebrated the birthday of their patronsaint Jackson tonight at Leader kranz Hall and Col John E Fellows of New York was chief orator Governor John Brown introduced Col Fellows who spoke in a characteristic way of the dead hero |
