1ICll and Taxpayers But Ryan and lilacs Arc Sot Heard from Routine Business The city council met last evening and by way of variety immediately cot down to business and did a large evenings work Councilman Beardsley presided and all members were present except Bell and Loofbourow J E Dooly eta asked that the intersection inter-section of Second South and West Temple street be paved with bituminous rock aspliaJtam instead of stone blocks on the ground that the former is Jess noisy costs less and is warranted for five years Denied The Commercial National bank and Commercial Block association sent in a communication stating that they had been erroneously assessed on their Second Sec-ond South street frontage in the sum of 1369 per front foot as their curbing had already been constructed under the supervision of the city engineer Further Fur-ther that the cost of paving in the said street should be 9S9 per front foot to k t them instead of 1369 and they asked that the matter be adjusted Referred to board of public works William Sheppard asked that the city pay him 20 for damages to his carriage caused by obstructions in the street Referred Re-ferred to committee on claims F E McGurrin et ale asked that SI street be graded from Brigham to Fourth street Referred to committee on streets The Utah Slaughtering company asked I that a place be designated for them to deposit de-posit garbage from their slaughter house Referred to sanitary committee A SUPERANNUATED FLUME Edward F Colborn called attention to the condition of the water flume and headgate to the same on Fort Douglas avenue and declared that the flume had outlived its usefulness and is a magnificent magnifi-cent ruin while the headgate is only I valuable as an illustration of primitive irrigation I ir-rigation methods Of course he wished I the matter remedied Referred to irrigating irrigat-ing committee and upon their report recommending that the flume and head gate be repaired it was referred back for an estimate of cost W W Chisholm et al asked that William Spier be appointed a special policeman po-liceman without pay to patrol both sides of Brigham street from Sixth to Eighth East Referred to committee on water works The county clerk submitted a copy of the resolutions aSopIeS by the county court on Monday last with reference to the rate of county taxation Filed A ATUHAl GAS EXTENSION A communication was received from the New American Natural Gas company stating that they had been constantly drilling and prospecting since the council granted them a ifancnise andin so doing had expended a large amount of money and discovered two additional flows of excellent natural gas It was further Elated that the companys wells reduced to a twoInch pipe with a sixtypound pressure of gas into the mains would convey con-vey into the city nearly 10000000 cubic feet of gasin twentyfour hours Further that they had been using their best endeavors en-deavors to perfect the necessary arrangements arrange-ments regarding distribution in the city by July 1 1893 but had been unable to do so owing to the stringency of money matters Now they asked that section 3 of their franchise be amended granting them further time in which to conduct gas into the city Referred to committee on municipal laws H E Redfield offered to duplicate the Fourth precinct fire station in the Second precinct for 549S3 Laid over temporarily temporar-ily W P OMeara desired to lease the clay lands on the southeast of the eouthwes quarter of section 28 township 1 north of range 1 east for twentyfive years upon the payment to the city of 10 cents > per load for all clay removed He further y stated that he would give employment to about twentyfive men Referred to the committee on public grounds The county clerk reported the action taken by the county court relative to urging the city authorities to repair the bridges crossing the Jordan and Salt Lake canal in the southern part of the walk by private contract con-tract the amount having been paid on a levy in the usual way Adopted provisional pro-Visional upon the acceptance of the work by the board of public works FIRE HOUSE CONTRACTS Tho board of public tvcrks reported that they had entered into a contract with W A Wight for the construction of a firehouse fire-house in the First precinct for 4635 under the plans ana specification prepared pre-pared by Messrs Monheim Bir Ire Proudfoot Also that the contractor had executed the required bond iu the sum of 2500 with L 0 Miller and H P Mason sureties The same old argument followed the reading of the rdport A motion to postpone until other bids were in was lost ana a motion to adopt was also lost The board further reported that the contract for the erection of the fire house in the Fourth precinct bad been awarded to H E JRedfield for 54993 and that he had executed a 2500 bond with S W Morrison and Edward Merrill sureties all of which was satisfactory to including in-cluding myself thirteen are married men and seventeen are single but will state that the majority of the single men have families support Every member employed in this department de-partment is an American citizen of Salt Lake city a voter and a majority of the department depart-ment are taxpayers Laid over The street supervisor stated that since the annexation to the city in the south east part the sprinkling district goes to Eleventh South street and that he had made temporary arrangements with the parties who sprinkle for the county to attend tend to the matter while
