Show A SWEET IDEA It has been the custom for many years of the leading grocery establishments establish-ments in this city o give their regular customers a Christmas present usually in the shape of candy or some similar seasonable commodity It is proposed j this year to give the amount that would be thus distributed in some suitable i suit-able goods to the poor of the city I This we look upon as a very sensible thing to do It was prompted by pure benevolence We believe the public will approve and appreciate the movement move-ment Good will come of it in two directions di-rections A large number of poor people peo-ple will receive relief Less candy will be consumed by the children which will be no harm to their health and they can be taught the virtue of sacrifice In aid of the needy The number of people who need assistance as-sistance in this city rs greater this year than ever before Extraordinary measures are necessary for their relief re-lief This measure will aid in the good work It would cost Z C M I in the neighborhood of 45O0 to make all the i Christmas presents usually distributed by that firm That divided among the 1 charitable organizations will be a great help and if other establishments do the same in proportion to their business the aggregate amount dispensed to the poor this Christmas will bq < very respectable re-spectable We think no customer who has usually us-ually received a package of candy at Christmas from the grocer will complain com-plain at not haying the usual Xmas gift in consideration of the fact that the poor gain the benefit And while some candy will have to be bought for the little folks if the quantity is made smaller and they ave impressed with the virtue of charity and the fact that they are doing something to afford relief re-lief to the destitute we believe the results re-sults will be very beneficial The promoters pro-moters of this change are to be highly commended |
