Show THE STftIKS S AND LAB R AGITATIUN ExPresident Harrison Discusses Them at Philadelphia 4 GOOD ADVICE TO LABOR AND CAPITAL CAITAf f The One Good Thing as the Result of Hard Times s 1 Workmen Are Not Mindful Enongk of Their Employer and the Mea With Money Are Too Prone to Throw Aaidc the Grievance of a Laborer an They Would An Old And Wornout Piece of Mc ery 4 J Philadelphia Dec ExPresident Harrison arrived in the city this afternoon after-noon from New York and will remain reman three days the guest of esPostmaster General Wanamaker j The expresident was the chief guest at thedinner given in his honor by Thomas May Pierce at the Bellevue this afternoon In the evening the expresident delivered de-livered an address at the commence ment exercises of the Pierce Business college at the Academy of Music The address was in the main confined to advicte to young men but there Were portions of it which dealt with public questions Of strikes and labor questons strkes ad agitation agi-tation generally the expresident I Is a sad and dangerous fact that capital and labor are organized to fight each other that the laboring man is taught to regard his employer a an antagonist too often a an enemy and that the greedy and vexed and impatient im-patient employer restful of what he regards re-gards unwarranted interference with business Is sometimjes too wih t treat the workman with a grievance a he would treat a Jolting unbalanced machine throw it into the scrap pile Like the armed peace now maintained in Europe this situation is costly and dangerous Every benevolent and thoughtful man is anxious and dis tressed I suppose Just and perfect peace will not be established until the kingdom of the Elcfcr Brother is setup set-up throughout the world and the Golden Rule becomes the law of human life The right fa acquire is lCe I to more important imprnt to the poor man than to the rich rch I Many reforms are weakened by their exclusiveness The invitation i not wide enough Men a put on the other side bcause of their surroundings sur-roundings or the color of tbMr skin without a chance to make their own choice I is a most wholesome and saving fact that the working people peo-ple of the United States so generally reject the teachings of eneraIy M workman is a producerthe anarchist a destroyer and fellowship Is impossible impos-sible How shall the poor be helped by the destruction of other destruton mens property prop-erty or by assassination or riots when the doors are barred and the streets full of tumult and mens hearts full of fear Is there any harvest for toll There Is only one good thing about these evil times and that is good will They give men an opportunity to show concern for others The roll of the largest brotherhood is being called and men see with great wonder how great the family is How many Idle workmen now see it Is not safe to assume as-sume their employers interest and theirs are wholly antagonistic or that one umbrella may not shelter both Is pot the conclusion too clear to escape es-cape the most sluggish understanding that hard times for the employer cannot can-not be good times for the employee A brisk and regular demand for the products of labor at fair prices is the only safe support of the wage scale as it Is of dividends The expresident also spoke on the subject of corporate trusts and monopolies monop-olies and of the epidemic of lynchinga as calculated to propogate rather than repress crime crme Tomorrow evening the expresidents reception at the Union League takes place Two thousand invitations hava 1 been sent out I |
