Show THE REGISTRATION OF VOTERS t The registration in this city is proceeding proceed-ing rather slowly Not because there are not enough registration officers because they are not diligent or because there is any desire on their part to skip a citizen whatever may be his political complexion A great many men are not at home when I the registrar calls It is impossible for an officer to know when people will bo out He can only put in so much time each day and register those citizens whom he finds and who are ready to take the registration oath But ample opportunity is given to everybody every-body who wishes to register When a visit has been made to the house of an unregistered citizen a printed notice is left there informing him that the deputy registrar has failed to find him and that he can register by calling at the office of the county registration officer which over the old McCoKNTCK bank on Main street We suggest to qualified citizens who have not been registered at their homes that it would be better to attend to the matter at once and not leave it until the last weeK in September when there will no doubt be a rush to the place appointed ap-pointed to close up the registration previous to the November election The registrar will attend to them now if they call at his office We hear no complaints about citizens being neglected or dodged or of any attempt at-tempt on the part of the registrars to evade registering a voter The insinuations insinua-tions of the Liberal organ as to what the Democratic registrar would do and which it had the hardihood to say was only good politics have not been justified jus-tified by the facts No one complains that anything unfair has been resorted to If any Liberal fails to register it will be his own fault The tricks of Liberal registrars are not imitated in any particular particu-lar Nor do Democrats consider such dodges justifiable in law politics or common decency Residents in the city should understand that the registration officers are not engaged en-gaged in a house to house canvass with an inquisitorial catechism They do not inquire into the politics religion or voting vot-ing intentions of the citizens That is being attempted by unauthorized and impudent persons who need not be noticed no-ticed further than to decline answering their questions It is a Liberal attempt to prepare for the campaign which they fear will leave them flat on the field or down in the ditch Register citizens but do not submit to be catechised |
