The men owning land west or the Jorden river have banded together for the purpose of securing manufactures and otherwise developing that section of the city Nearly a hundred of the large property owners met at the chamber of commerce last evening and organized T A Davis was made chairman lof the meeting and C E Waatland secretary The latter stated the purpose of the meeting meet-ing and the advantages of organization In a short speech pithyand t the point Mr Taylor stated that when the Methodist Metho-dist university was up he raised more money than Ogden or any other place and it would have been an easy matter to have located the university there a a monument to the West side I this thing is organized on the plan of the chamber of commerce we will surprise ourselves by what we can do in securing enterprises for that part of the city Mr James said that he was not much of a speaker but when it came to selling a lot across the Jordan becould hold his own with the best of thom While the impression impres-sion prevailed that the land could not be cultivated he claimed it to be a mistaken idea a the land south of the city that at present is the garden spot of the county atone at-one time was also an aikalt bed but had been reclaimed by fertilizers W H Shearman paid Mr Taylor a tribute trib-ute for his enterprise in building up the west side I you look over the map he said you will notice that the city cannot grow much to the north or east It is not likely that men will go five or ten miles for land when the can get it on the west side I nearer in and much cheaper The Methodist Method-ist university has regretted that it did not accept our oiler of 50000 a the land that we offered them would now be worth JloOOOO I we can get any large manufactories manu-factories they not only will benefit the men who work in the factories but all the land owners Anything that benefits the west side will benefit the entire city Sir McGurrin stated that manufactories are the best thing for any cityto get as by this means you create a demand for everything every-thing He thought there vould be no difficulty dif-ficulty in raising the money Mr Janes endorsed the scheme and stood ready t freely contribute to the enterprise en-terprise trprie Mr Porter believed that every man belonging be-longing to an organization of this kind noula be a standing advertisement lor that purl of the city He had raised potatoes the smallest of which were as large as your nstMr I Mr Parts was called on to speak from the farmers standpoint While some of the land was rich and productive some of it was not He had make farming a success suc-cess cessC E Wantland called attention to the II fact that the leading investments on the west side had been made by some of the leading officials of the CLicago Burlington Quincy and the solid men of this city were largely interested there The railway rail-way situation is a in favor of the westside west-side The railroad going to Deep Creek bringing in the smelting ores will pass through this section of the city and there will probably be a branch to Bingham Mr Williams charged that if the westside west-side had got a black eye it was given by the landowners themselves resorting to some questionable schemes to sell their lots styling the othor mans alkali flats I think the city will extend to the Oquirrh range To help the city we must have something for men to exist uoon except town lots On motion of Mr Wantland the chair appointed I ap-pointed on organization C E WanUaml k W Senior C S Wilfces E W Taylor and B A lL Froisetb who retired to I make their report Mr Thompson said he was ready to stand by the west side for all it is worth Mr Jacobs recited experience in making mak-ing his first investments on the west side when some of the knowing ones smiled He said that there had been a great improvement im-provement property on the west side during the past yet Mr Snearman getting into the reminiscent remi-niscent mood said be bad never yet missed it on judging the values of property when he followed his own judgment He predicted pre-dicted that every acre t n the west side would be worth 500 an acre in five ears I T A Davis hoped Mr Shearmans prediction pre-diction would come true as he held 1200 acres of land and would not have to walkout walk-out of town He predicted that there would be at least five railroads to the lake within another year He was authorized I to state that the West Side Rapid Transit Railway company had 100000 in its treasury treas-ury ready t push the road to the lake and open up a bathing resort He thought there was room for half a dozen resorts and that all the railroads will start re within a few sorts years Mr Zwickj a level headed man insisted that every acre of land there will advance 100 and perhaps ltOO per cent if this scheme is carried out I we Jay off 50000 of the 500000 lots we will get I great deal more for the 450000 than we would by keeping it all Another speaker observed that the men working In factories would live near their places of employment and that i factories are located in the West Side it would get the benefit Secretary Gillespie was called and heart ly endorsed th project stating that there I were manufacturing interests seeking locations and that just this kind of an organization would be ready to take hold of them Just thee kind of meetings make booms said the secretary with emphasis Mr Froiseth gave it as his experience in the brick manufacture that the soil west of the Jordan would mane c good brick as can be made in
