Show LIBERAL DESPERATION The Tribune expended four columns ol editorial matter yesterday In its attempt to show 1 that polygamy is not dead in Utah and that there is imminent danger of its practice being revived 2 that the Peoples Peo-ples party is not really disbanded 3 that the people of Utah are so enslaved that nothing short of death would free them The proof of the first proposition is that some five or sir years ago the Mormons declared plural marriage to be a vital part of their religion the decision of the courts to the contrary notwithstanding At that time the doctrine of polygamy was undoubtedly a vital part of Mormon 1 faith and practice but it is longer so m The doctrine is not preached nor inculcated in any way nor Is it practiced by the Mormon Mor-mon people To preach or practice that doctrine would be in direct violation of the L expressed will of the church I The same paper that now pretends to believe be-lieve polygamy is not a dead issue declared de-clared openly a few months ago that it knew of polygamous marriages which were being celebrated every day THE HERALD promptly branded the paper a liar and challenged it to the proof Tne paper crawled down and said it btlicccd such to be the case Once more we invited the paper to state the grounds for its belief and it kept ilent Now it takes the absurd ground that polygamy is likely to be reinstated rein-stated of which it knows there is about the same degree of probability as there was that slavery would be reestablished In I Mississippi after that state was restored to the union The proposition that the Peoples party I is not really dissolved is just a little too ridiculous to admit of serious argument But the organ objects to the dissolution of the Peoples party on the ground that as it claims the church authorities consented I t to it It says the church authorities were the real leaders of the Peoples party and I since they consented to or ordered the dissolution I dis-solution of the party therefore the dissolution I I dissolu-tion is not genuine 1 This conclusive rea 1 v soiling must certainly stagger the whole Liberal party The fact is the people of Utah have for a long time been anxious for the formation of parties on the lines of national politics and have embraced the first opportunity afforded them to do so If tho church leaders are also pleased with the movement so much the better but we c happen to know that the Impulse lor that movement came from the people and not from the heads of the church From the day that a Democratic organization of = sufficient influence to guarantee its perpetuity r perpet-uity announced its antipathy to dlsfran ohisement and invited the people of Utah without regard to previous political affiliations affilia-tions to join vith the Democratic party of the nationfrom that day forward we say it was clear to a great majority of thePeo los party what should be done At once vithoui waiting for any permission from y he church authorities or any one else cumbers of Peoples party members began to join tho Democrats Then a u Republican club spoke out and some joined the Republicans Then observing the fact that the Peoples party r was rapidly weakealng if indeed it was act going pieces taejjoanty committee i called together the officers of the party aad I by a vote of the representatives of the C whole party took formal action dissolving ib the organization Now that the former I a Members of balparty are jebrfng wither I thT = > > J I the Democratic or the Republican organization i organi-zation as they individuallyprefer the disgruntled i dis-gruntled sheet of expiring Liberalism insultingly In-sultingly tells them they have been instructed in-structed which party to join that some have been Uact aside to be Democrats I others to be Republicans etc It Is too late for this brazen liar to make many I people believe that kind of stuff I The third proposition is that the Mormons Mor-mons being necessarily corrupt perjured criminal disgraceful held in slavery as the great majority of them have been from their births cannot have thrown off the obligations which bound their very souls I and become American citizens I To which we reply that it would be difficult I diffi-cult to find in all Utah a single Mormon that is not a better American citizen I than the editor who makes this foul accusation accusa-tion against them The journalistic buzzard I buz-zard who fed on dying Nevada untU there was nothing left on the bony carcass to I pick at who after a long residence of I undisturbed security in Utah at the same occupation boasts that he has nothing noth-ing to bind him to this territory but his debts he forsooth dares to wag his daily perjured tongue and talk about American citizenship I Let the following extract from his senile and vicious pen declare how much of an American he is One of the strangest features of Mormonism and the Mormons is their seeming utter lack of comprehension of the enormity of disobeying the lairs S C S Tfte JrtyJny probably thai trill be taken from them mil be Ihefranchue they have so long prostituted Then they will find themselves at the mercy of such laws as may be prescribed for them If that will not do the next attack mil be on their property and no man who belietet it right for him to obey the First Presidency rather than the law will be permitted to acquire title to lands This will bankruptcy not only for the masses but for the rich in the organization Tribune September 161SSS To accomplish this final bankruptcy of the whole Mormon people he now asks the Liberals to make one final effort to capture the legislature and then disfranchise and outlaw the Mormon people by the passage of testoath laws and other prescriptive legislation This Is what the Liberal party 15 asked to attempt Dare they do itJ |
