Show A TRIAL SERMON Rev J L Stern Delivers His Second Address A Feeling Appeal for the Education of the Hearts Rather Than the Manners of Children Before the Jewish congregation at the Josephito chapel yesterday evening the Ret J L Stern delivered his second able discourse as a candidate for that pulpit The preacher took for his text Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord and ho shall turn tho heart of the fathers again to the children and the heart of the children again to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a 1 curse MaL IV 5 6 The spencer doubted if there ever had been or if there over would be a time when outward agencies agen-cies might be needed to turn parents and childrens hearts toward each other and yet Agur in speaking of the four wicked generations laid There is n generation that curseth their father and doth not bless their mother Pro XXX 11 And but lately Helen Gardner the gentle American novelist has placed before the world the horrible picture of a son at the grave of his fathar cursing his sire Were then after all the prophets right and had the terrible time come when chil drens and parents hearts were not in accord ac-cord J The speaker answered his own question with an emphatic not yet but he added an equally emphatic very nearly He did not despair of the outcome out-come though if parents would take the education of their children in hand as vigorously as possible Not tho education of the intellect and outward manners for these he thought were well taken care of but the education of the heart which was at the host attended to in a perfunctory manner if attended to at all Parents must not rely on higher teachers for that part of the childs education they must do it themselves them-selves although they have aright to ex pect and they always will got the aid of the Rabbi whose official duties brought him in such close contact with the lives of the members of his flock from the cradle to t the grave and who thus became the partner part-ner in the duties of the parent toward the children Nevertiring watchfulness love accompanied by strictness and good example must characterize this education Even young children should be taught according fo the golden rule of Rabbi Hillel judging ourselves as we judge others The grand principle of Judaism to honor parents to be just and charitable to do right and shun evil should permeate childrens lives We teach our children to be proud of their country and of their flag and justly so Wo must also teach them to take well care of the standard of Israel four thousand years old It too has I the red and white stripes and the blue field with the stars the red for the beacon light of truth the white for purity of character char-acter and the blue for the heaven which is I created for ourselves and all mankind even here on earth by the first two Lot parents turn their whole hearts toward their children educating them then the child rens hearts will be turned towards the I parents oven beyond the grave |
