Show Democracy at Spanish Fork i An enthusiastic meeting was held in tho City Hall at Spanish Fork on Thursday evening The hall was crowded to its utmost capacity many gentlemen who were unable to find seats stood during the entire meeting which lasted nearly threo hours The speakers were Delegate Caine and Hon W H King The former stated why ho was a Democrat explaining the principles of that party the greatest good to the greatest number Democracy asked for no special or class privileges but extended equal rights to every citizen Mr King spoKe on the tariff showing that it was a tax which weighed heavily upon the poor for the benefit of the rich and powerful corporations trusts and cobinations Democrats favored a tariff for revenue confined to the needs of government gconomically administered High tariff upon luxuries which only the rich could indulge in and low tariff upon the clothing and other necessaries of life which every mechanic and working man and every family must have He deprecated the idea of a strong central cen-tral government as being unAmerican He pointed to Greece and Rome and showed hON the greed and corruption of strong central governments there made up from a privileged class had deprived their citizens citi-zens of their rights and liberties and left those countries once strong weak preys for tyrants and usurpers Both speakers were loudly and heartily applauded and at the conclusion a unanimous unani-mous vote of thanks was tendered them and the meeting closed with three rousing cheers for the Democratic party |
