Show PLUMJ3ERS STRIKE Morrill Explains How He Was Assaulted I thorny 1JeI Threatened With a Sore Head If He Would Work and to Hare to Walk Out of Town I w l1t to show you that the plumbers have threatening the menH sid B M Ellerbeck as he introduced a HERALD reporter to Thomas Beal Beal said that he went ta work for Heesch i Ellerbeck about four weeks ago and that ono of the striking plumbers threatened to throw him off the building if be didnt quit work Two weeks ago one of the strikers threatened to give him a sorehead and said that he would have to Walk out of town If he worked W G Morrell wrote the following letter let-ter to Ellerbeck explaining how he happened hap-pened to malje the affidavit that was published pub-lished yesterday Now that the plumbers have published an article sworn to by mewhich article these plumbers gave mo their word of honor was not to be so uledI feel it my duty to Mr Ellerbeck to state the whole case to the public I was hired as a journeyman jour-neyman plumber by Heesch Elterbeck June 23 1692 I went to work on the morning of the 23d That evening a union man came to me and said Dont you know there is a strike on in this town I replied Yes Ho said Why wont you help the boys out and I then told him my reasons for working which were In short that I had to have money Vk ell he said if thats the case I dont see bow the boys can have any kickcoming The next morning before be-fore wcrk about 730 ns I was standing in front of the shop another uuion man came to me and the following dialogue took place He Youre the fellow thats working here aint you I replied Yes Ho said You think youre doing do-ing a bl of a fino thing working when all the other boys are out dont you He then asked me where 1 learned my trade and not getting much satisfaction and as he saw Mr Hceschcoming this I surmise he went off That evening about S oclock I passed the alley by Fritz Ruperts saloon and this same man and two others were I standing there I noticed them but did not speak a word This man spoke to his two friends and 1 went to the corner and crossed to the hardware store on First South They cut across and this man came in front of me and one of his companions com-panions on each sjde I being alone He said Youre a nice sort of a Gd dd kid aint youl Why dont you act like a maul Isold Im doing the best I can I am willing to do right by the boys He said Are you working I replied Yes He said Now I answered an-swered No not just at this present minute min-ute He then said No you got laid off At that he drew baok and struck me twice a5 hard as ho could and I Odged from between them and ran toward Main street when one of the others made a kick at me and said Take that you G d scab I went to Main street andgot a policeman who went Dacir with me but they had gone The next morning I went to work as usual and during the day I told a man who was working about the fracas He I guess told Mr Etlorbeck and this was the cause of the remarks made by Mr Ellerbeck which were merely spoken in a friendly way just as one man would ask another Are you hurt This is the whole case and as to all thing > there are two sides This ill the truth and as there were people on the corner cor-ner at the time I was assaulted I can get proof to that Very trulyyours W G MORBILL |
