Show A NAME sou tue STATZ Wo believe it is pretty generally conceded that statehood forUtah Is in the very nder future Tbe Democratic party of the Halloo Ha-lloo Is on record us in favor of it that being be-ing one of tho thiogs to which tho organization organiza-tion committed itself in its recent great convention All Democrats in the present Congress are In favor of It and many of the leaders have publicly advocated the emancipation The local Democratic party today stands on a platform demanding statehood and all the members are reauy to take off theIr coats roll up their slosvcs and work to that end The national Republican Re-publican party baits and hesitates It Is still In doubt and would like a few years in which to satisfy itself but a good many influential Republicans have said thpy would vote for tho admission of tho territory terri-tory knowing as they do that tile local situation Is such as to make it absolutely safo from every point of view to take Utah into the Union Home Republicans as a matter of course will favor statehood Indeed the only people hero who will oppose the project are a few office holders bosses and spoilsmen numbering not u thousand votes all told They object because statehood state-hood would leave them without office and deprive them pf thprivilege of feeding at the public crib Rather than lose thetr Individual In-dividual opportunities they would keep a quarter of a million people in perpetual bondage However their opposition will not count They have been shorn of their influence beqp repudiated by the national parties and both here and in Washington are regarded as malcontents soreheads Nothing they can do need be feared As a matter of fact statehood is at our very doors We believe that with a little effort on the part of the united people here an enabling act can be passed early in the next session of Congress and that Utah can be take Into tbe Union at the same time that Arizona and New Mexico enter And this calls for the question of the I name to be given the new state It is an important question too as the delegations at Minneapolis and Chicago fully understand under-stand Utah stood so low down in the alphabetical list that she was deprived of her influence every proposition upon which a vote was taken being decided be Utah was called That didnt amount to much in the conventions it will amount to a good deal in future if the present name shall be retained and Utah bo made to bring up the rear in every roll calL TUB HERALD wants the politicians and the people to think this matter over so that a few months hence when the time shall come for deciding upon a name for the state the futuro may be considered with the view losing no points |
