Show NEWS OF THE ARMY Lieut M J OBrien to Represent the U S Army In the Oriental War Kansas City Times Sept 15 Lieutenant Michael J OBrien Fifth infantry in-fantry has been honored with the detail to represent the government of the United tal smxlh struggle 1 now going on in the OrIent between China and Japan The assignment is for the purpose of accompanying accom-panying the forces of the Japan government govern-ment upon whose request Mr OBrien detail de-tail is made He will be attached to the United States legation at Tokio He will be required to observe a strict neutrality and is expected to furnish the United States with a budget of reports that Will equal those made by those of the officer of the United States army who was pre ent at all of the battles of the Crimean war and whose rport is one of the best descriptions o the military operations of that struggle overwritten In selecting Lieutenant OBrien for this important duty General Schoflelds course will meet with general approval throughout through-out the service where ihe young man is I I known He is a graduate of the class of cas 18S3 and though standing second in the class preferred an assignment to the Infantry In-fantry In the Thirteenth regiment he served until promoted a frt lieutenant January 2 1S32 which canned him to the regiment in which he is now serving I I Lieutenunt OBrien until a few days ago performed duty as an assistant instructor in the department of military ar at the Infantry and Cavalry school of which he is also an honored graduate I His detail is largely due to the promInent promi-nent mention made of his name during the recent disturbances in Chicago where he did duty with the company of the Fifth infantry commanded by Captain Randall I was he whom the newspapers of that city had decided upon for selection as war correspondent for the Chicago Press association asso-ciation and it was for a lime his intention inten-tion to have secured a years leave of absence ab-sence to accept this service Those who know him recognize his qualification for the place Now that the government has chosen I l him to represent it at the faroff land he will be op duty continuously receiving re-ceiving full pay and be paid all expanses connected with i He Is married to the daughter of Captain Kendall Sixth cavalry cav-alry The ofilcers who made the report on the Crimean war were Major Delafield and Captain of engineers George B McClellan of the corps |
