Show PLANTERS MEET Convention Goes Over to the Nn tional Republican Party iu a Body New Orleans Sept 17The sugar planters convention today was a large and verv enthusiastic assemblage of I the leading planters of Louisiana and some of the most representative men of New Orleans The bolters from the Democratic party par-ty had everything their own way and resistance to the programme was but feebly made The convention went over to the national Republican party in a body Mr E N Pugh called the meeting to order and exNaval Officer Kernochan was made temporary and exMayor Behan nermanent chairman of the organization or-ganization all three having heretofore been nrominent Democrats A representative body was entrusted with the resolutions which were adopted adop-ted bv an overwhelming majority The resolutions endorse the proceedings proceed-ings of the recent sugar convention held here believe in protection for all American industries declare the people never asked Congress for a bounty but when the bounty was passed i was regarded I re-garded as a pledge for fifteen years and caused the mortgaging of plantations i planta-tions and the expenditures of immense sums of money in the purchase of modern mod-ern machinery and in the making of elaborate improvements for the manufacture manu-facture of sugar urge the organization of clubs committees and conventions conventons throughout the state with a view of electing members of Congress who will stand by the national Republican party in the organization of the House and finally declaring that The causes which have led to the inauguration inaugura-tion of this movement are of a financial finan-cial and Industrial nature The president is directed to appoint a committee of thirtyfive with full power of the convention to be known 1 as the state committee of the national Republican party I |
