cooling trade winds dally with tho stately cocoas lies the Hawaiian group of islands A generation ago they solved to adorn some savage tale today they stand in the front line of civilization a century ago they were under a king with almost absolute abso-lute power now by bloodless revolution a ministry is vested with the real powers of government representing the popular will of all races I generation ago Honolulu Hono-lulu was I provincial town today it has 20000 people and all the modern improvements improve-ments which go to constitute a metropolitan metropol-itan city In 1890 the population of the entire group of eight islands val 90000 The exports ex-ports are rice coffee and fruits that of sugar being 130000 tons and the capital invested in that industry alone being about t S33000000 In 1530 the islands were of little importance commercially in 1590 their foreign trade exceeded 20000000 and the exports from San Francisco to Hawaii exceeded those to any other ports of the Pacific Hon L A Thurston and E M Walsh of Honolulu spent last Sunday in Salt Lake on route for Chicago as representatives representa-tives of the Hawaiian government to complete com-plete arrangements for the exhibit at the Worlds fair The government and those 1 in immediate charge propose to expend nearly 60000 in making an exhibit which will be a source ot pride to the little king dom of islands and especially gratifying to the United States gatfying Mr Thurston stated to a HEBALD representative repre-sentative that it was THE PURPOSE QF TIE lA AIA GOVEBir MENT to erect a building for the display providing provid-ing a suitable site could be obtained end i not they would then ask the not wouir asl privilege of grouping the island exhibit in one building build-ing Every product and industry will be represented the skill of the native and the beauties of nature will vie with each other in attractiveness Plants and trees ornamental orna-mental und fruit bearing as well will be favorably with any country In addition to what has been named tfere will bo an immense cyclorama of tbe celebrated cele-brated VOLCANO OF KILAUEA 1 four hundred by fifty feet reprecenting the BCtlvo volcano and molten leva lake which in its natural dimensions is six hundred hun-dred feet deep and nine miles in circum ferance containing more than two score of lakes and fountains part or all of which are in continuous action To see a boiling surging roaring lako of molten lava dashing against the sides of Q vast pit and throwing thousands of jets of rod not liquid into the air is said to ba one of the most sublime and aweinspiring scenes on earth To trantfer this to canvass and by means of proper lights and appliances reproduce nature na-ture I striking truthfulness vlll be the work of the celebrated artist Walker W Burredge ol San Francisco who visited the islands last fall for tho purpose of viewing nis wonaoritu volcano ana made a working sketch of i at the time And also will come the native Hawaiian band which created such a furore among the lovers of music on tho Pacific coast a few years ago and that yields tho palm to cono lest It be the Seventh regiment band of New York PEHSONAL AND POLITICAL Mr Thurston one of the commissioners is a prominent member of the local profession profes-sion at Honolulu and though only thirty five years of age was the leader of tbo revolution of 1SS7 which overthrew the despotic powers of the king and estab lish d the large measuro of popular government gov-ernment now enjoyed by the islands During Dur-ing the three years succeeding that memorable mem-orable event he was prime minister nnd is eJ now member elect of the upper house of 7 the legislature which convenes next month From Mr Walsh his companion and fellow commissioner a wealthy sugar nlanter of long residence at tbe islands it I was learned that business and pohticaiaf lair are growing somewhat serious owing very largely to the blow which the sugar industry received from the McKinley bill bi As a result of this sugar has been raised 1 at a loss and this in turn has produced astringency a-stringency in the money market and a loss of confidence generally With this condition condi-tion of affairs confronting them all classes of the people native and foreign casses are seriously considering I ANNEXATION with the United States or i that cannot be se ured then with Canada or Great Britain As to the plan or date when this i likely to be brought about no details were given but the feeling among those who have studied the situation favors the throwing of the strong and protecting arm of b great nation over tho gems of the sea The Americans represent the strongest element of the foreign population having four fifths of the wealth and doing nine tenths of tho commerce and carrying trade The political stability and future growth of business depends on the bu6nen support of a e good government for there is concentrated k in a small area some of the most difficult problems of a social and political nature known to this country Under tho present treaty the Unitea States have the use of Pearl harbor Stats Pear it must be recognized that this is the S r C d Me c > strategic point of the Pacific and tho footing foot-ing once gained should be mado permanent by honorable and peaceable means that may eventually lead up to the closest possible pos-sible relationsand Hawaii become the island gem of our starry banner PLEASED WITU SALT LAKE Both gentlemen expressed themselves as much pleased with Salt Lake Mr Walsh ventured the prophecy and coming from a successful business man it is worth repeating re-peating that this city would be booming in less than a year Ho proved his faith by leaving an order for the purchase of same real estate in the northeast part of the town Mr Thurston presented the HERALD representative rep-resentative with a copy of his compilation The Vistas of Hawaii a most artistic work full of useful and interesting data and illustrating the beauties of the islands While not saying so both gentlemen seemed to think that eyon here in Utah we do not know what scenery isand could not until wo had visited the little king doms of the sea On opening the book wo found that even our own Mark Twain had furnished this beautiful sentiment and we yielded the point without debate No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one other things leave me but it abides other things change but it remains the same For me its balmy airs are always blowing its summer seas flashing in the sun the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear 1 can see its garlanded crags its leaping cascades cas-cades its plumy palms drowsing by the sboio its remote summits floating like islands is-lands above the clouirack lean feel the spirit of its woodland solitude I can hoar the plash of its brooks in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago YOU UAN
