put to the house and was carried by a unanimous vote Apostle I Lyman moved that the committee bo discharged dis-charged from further duty in this regard Lnammously carried APOSTLE r ST LTJIAV There are many important reasons why I the Latterda Saints meet in conference seralannually to worship the Lord andre and-re oivo counsel and to transact tha business busi-ness of the church pertaining to the buildup I l build-up up of the kingdom of Gcd upon the earth The people have passed through many bitter experiences for the good of the j gospel in this as well as in previous dispensations dis-pensations A mighty power and influence In i his world seems to be opposed to God which seems at all times to try and thwart tiis designs from a standpoint of a mortal I the opposor has seemingly been successful hia far for many things havo occurred vtich hne dampened tho hopes of the fol lowers < of the Lord And there has never been a greater dampenor on the feelings of the chosen people of God than when Jesus I laid down his life on Calvary What God has exacted of His people hare always been trials and not a few havo turned from the right track because the Lord has commanded that which they j did not wish to do Tho Saint or many of them have not so kept their lives as the I Lord would wish them to and In some re spects they have been very neglectful Mny havo been derelict in the matter of prayers unto God and in spite of the fact thu the people havo bees endowed with riches through the graco of God many of them havo also been direlect in paying their tithing The Saints are increasing ia numbers in the fertile alleys of Utah and neighboring states and territories and their business enterprises as a rule arc successful Tho people aro getting to bo aero prosperous every year and they should give to the Lord according to what tbty hate The tithe offerings should increase in-crease as the years roll on and their faith and trust in God should also increase in largo proportion from day to day Tho Stunts should also pay strict attention to the word of Wisdom My brethren if all were right there would bo no need for the admonitions given bj the first presidency yesterday There should be no bitter rancor or feeling of hatred ono against another in tho church It ig i the duty of tho people of Zion to respect re-spect tho counsels of those in authority and to pay honor to them as Is meet Tho I president who is 1 tho divinely called mouthpiece mouth-piece of God should bo obeyed by nil the Saints in all that tends to the welfare and building up of Zion The people of Zion should discard politics and every other minor thing that will tend to disrupt tho chcrch or that will tend to divide them in tho gospel The people are expected to boa bo-a unit in regard to the gospel and the principles prin-ciples thereof and a division on party lines should not create any division in anything else and there should be no bitterness among the Saints Whenever any of the I ntoplo have o feeling of anger or discord I toward any of his brethren he may know beta In the wrong and that it Is his duty to forgive end forgot and to bo on brotherly terms with all his fellow menThe men-The revelations recently given by tho Lord in regard to the giving up and setting aside oi plural marriage in regard 10 the Issuance of this manifesto in regard to the division in politics and in regard to the many changes which havo recently come over the people have undoubtedly tried the hearts of many of the people but there are few if any who have loft the church on account of them In closing Apostle Lyman spoko for a few minutes of the capstone exercises which will take place today saying that the occasion will be a memorable one for Israel APOSTLE 3OVy REMIT SMITH lhave received much joy in listening to the testimonials of my brethren who hove been actuated by the good spirit of God I know of co people who havo ever been on the earth who bavAieen so amply taught I in til things which go to make up tho sum j I tcui of life as have the Latterday Saints God has given all tho advantages possible to the people and all the speakers aro led by the power of God so that they give to their hearers a knowledge of the things of I God Alter so many years of such culture j j I from our speakers it seems to mo to bo hardly possible that any of us can be switched j from the right track 1 have today to-day to give my testimony that God means that this people shall accomplish the destiny des-tiny mapped out for it and that in the hands of this people no man will be powerful power-ful enough to turn aside Gods work I rejoice in the counsel of my brethren that we should guard the peace and unity of Zion I have never seen the day when I was at all doubtful as to the true mission of this church upon the earth Ho said ho bad been requested to stato that an effort was on foot to erect a monument monu-ment to tbo late President Brigham Young that hero in the settlement of this esters country and to the body of heroes and heroines who came with him here and loyally loy-ally planted the American flag upon this soil He appealed to those present to contribute con-tribute as far as their means would allow towards the accomplishment of this grand work lie trusted that every man woman and child would help the undertaking forward for-ward that every Mormon and nonMor mon throughout the laud who respected the work that had been dono in the interests inter-ests of the Gospel in this part of the world would throw in his mite When the vis itors to this conference returned home to their respective districts they should ox orciso their endeavors to induce others to to contribute that their names might bo recorded as having taken part in so noblo a cause tPOSTLE MARINER W MERRILL I I havo enjoyed this conference exceed j ingl j and every word and counsel that has I been given has been fitting and proper I I have looked over in my mind tbo years that have gono by sinco our location in these i vallejs I was not hero at the laying of the corner stone of the temple It has occurred oc-curred to me that a vast amount of meaus I has been expended by the Saints in the erection of temples This is an evidence to me that this is tho Lords work for in I all times Gods people have erected temples I and how many have been built history does not tell us The Latter day Saints havo I manifested their faith by their works We havent got through with our work and there is a necessity that the people I peo-ple shall put forth their efforts so the temple tem-ple may soon bo opened and so the people may perform the ceremonies for the redemp I tion of our dead This Is an important matter for no living men would wish to make our ceremonies for we know not how soon we may be taken up into tho kingdom of God All Israel wishes President Woodruff Wood-ruff to dedicate this temple I know thai President Woodruff will be there as will Presidents Young Hober C Kimball and many others for these have been at the dedication of other temples I saw Presi dent Young at the dedication of the Logan temple I know this If we are full of unbelief un-belief wo will not know that theso souls of the dead presidents will bo present but If 1 we have faith we will know An illustration illustra-tion is that certain sisters in a room heard beautiful singing while others who wero in tho same room did not 1 can bear testimony that this work is truo Wo will be judged and will have to bear this rixmlta nf our acts inW the d nvtnrnne I If the Saints will conform their lives to the principles of the gospel they will have a I testimony of tho truth of tho gospel Wo should not talk against any man but wo should be willing to do good to all people j < This is the way wo should be and vvo should not have animosity in our hearts against any one We como together in these conferences to havo our minds re freshed and to have ourselves stirred up iu regard to our duties that wo may go homo with now hopes and with our principles more deeply Imbedded We wish to grow In tho knowledge of the gospel so wo can say In tho end that wo have grown in tho knowledge of the gospel to tho best of our ability Every man and woman should be able to say this Iho work of God has grownas Is witnessed by the change In tho conditions of the people of this church Tho work of the Lord is firmly established and If we help on with this work God will sustain us and help us to the end APOSTLE ANTON H LUND I can endorse all the remarks rondo by my brethren In tho past intolerance has been productive of much evil We tind that tho peoplo havo been willing to shed each others blood Relgious opinions are taking hold now and no now see that men are allowed to have their own rcliclous opinions If we aro willing to be tolerant in religious matters we should be willing to be tolerant in political and other matters Let us not forgot ono high calling and lot these minor things divide us but lot us remain re-main in union as the gospel demands I am pleased that we havo a system of church schools so no can educate edu-cate our young In our faith We aro not afraid to have our peoplo study and becomo educated for we aro not afraid that when men become educated that they will go back on Mormonism When men whether ignorant or highly educated start out to get a testimony of the gospel and will seek tho Lord they will got a strong testimony We want to have schools of our own where our children can be taught and I approve of having a church system of schools But we do not want to look down on tbo district schools becauso they are very useful We should not forget our religious classes for we want to give our children all that which no man can tako from them I see that tho Saints voted this morning for the establishment estab-lishment of a church university I am glad of this because wo can soon that is after the establishment of the university give our sons and daughters a good high educa ion here instead of sending to eastern schools This will bo very desirable I asK the blessings of God upon this people PRESIDENT OCOKOC Q CANNON It will be appropriate for mo to say something thing before dismissal in regard to the subject sub-ject j of the proposed monument to be erected to the memory of Brigham Young The matter has been carefully considered a committee to take charge of the matter has been secured and a sculptor to carve the statuo has been secured At first it was thought that comparatively few would wish to pay for this monument but after much consideration the promoters came to tho conclusion that every member of tho church would like to contribute to such a work and it was therefore decided that they should be able to contribute ono dollar each Mho contributions will not be limited to this as tnoso who wish to give more can do so but it was considered that each Saint would be able to give the amount named Tho contributions of a dime or a quarter from the children will also be appreciated This is n good time to earnestly take the mutter in hand Judge Elias A Smith has been appointed ap-pointed treasurer of tho board and the contributions of as many of the Saints us can donate will bo thankfully received by him And when those who aro present at this meeting return home they can tell their neighbors of this work which is going forward and Induce them to contribute their mites also In tho days to come everything in which we now take part and I every such movement in which our children take part will be ro membered by the Saints with feelings feel-ings of gratification For this reason it is by far best that the subscription to I this fund should bo a general one This I movement for this monument had its origin ori-gin in the heads of the church for when L the committee made the proposal to them thoy heartily approved of it and what Is i now being done is done with their approval 1 and sanction In my remarks yesterday afternoon I alluded to Brother John Henry Smith A t member my family afterwards called my attention to what I bad said and ubserved i that I did not explain myself fully but loft myself open to misconstruction Lost there should be any misappiehenslon on this point I wish now to explain what I I really meant What said was quite clear to myself though perhaps it was not so clear to some who beard me It appears to have been thought that wo the first presi dency told Brother Smith to do what ho had done Now tbe explanation of this is very simple sim-ple John Henry Smih came to tho first presidency when the division on party lines took place and said to us I am a Republican I would like to givo my voice to my brethren on Republicanism Can It being ono of tho Twelve do it Am I at liberty Will I bo transcending mi bounds or doing anything improper I Wo told him that we saw no impropriety in his Jo Ing this Now that is what I meant by the remark I made yesterday nnd I take this opportunity of explaining it because I was told by two or three last evening that they wero afraid somebody would put a i I I wrong construction on what I said I take pleasure in explaining tide though to tina j tin-a I first 1 presidency it was quite plain at the time I Afternoon Services Tho seats of the tabernacle were filled in every corner and there was very little J standing room leftrough estimates placing plac-ing the number in the congregation at 12000 Tho first hymn was sung by tho choir and congregation the words being Our God we raise to Thee Thanks for our blessings free sung to the music of America Thepieco is one suited for largo choruses and it is probable that no assembly ever put more feeling into God Save tho Queen or into America than this congregation put into this hymn of praise The effect was grand and the beautiful strain seemed to carry ono from tho building into space The choir also sang the 214th hymn Lord WIlt Thou hear me When I Pray 1 This is ono of the most beautiful hymns in tho book and the splendid blending of the fino I male and female voices in the choir cannot be so well shown in any other hymn APOSTLE AunxnAit n CANNON I cannot express my feelings on arising among my brethren of much more experience experi-ence to speak of the things of God It seems a long time since the church was organized or-ganized and especially long in consideration considera-tion of the things that havo beon done There has been much done but much of Gods work remains to be done for He has given to us tho duty of preaching this gospel gos-pel to nil tho world In almost every language the truth has been preached but those who think of tho number of peoples in tho world will see that there is a stupendous stu-pendous work jot to bo done On tho islands in the Pacific und on the South j and North American continents there are millions of our Fathers children to whom tho gospel must bo curried by the elders of this church We Bro asked then why dont we send out moro missionaries When requests are sent out by the twelve for missionaries very many excuses are sent in by those young men whom we call upon Business is assuming such proportions propor-tions among our peoplo that they seem not to have any time to attend to theso spiritual spirit-ual things But the time will soon come when our elders will preach this gospel in I every known tongue and to every known people and the people of the earth will L Hock to thtse valleys And wo should IS I i look after the emigrants who como to these I valleys and should put them to work or thoy will bo disheartened and will apostatize I I and will become our enemies This land is a fruitful one and brings forth sustenance suste-nance in abundance and tbo I mountains are filled with every Ir kind of mineral and wo should siozo oven r opportunity to make the land Mold We S see that among us there aro representatives representa-tives from all parts of the earth and thero is not a handicraft known to the civilize i world that vvo have not an expert bane among us And I think we are not doing as we should in not utilizing overy thing we have iu our midst because wo aro not building up our industries We have complaints com-plaints from all over Utah that there is not employment enough for our young men and they are going to other states to find it Wo have resources sufficient to sustain sus-tain ten times as largo a people as ours in our territory Wo could utilize the forces God has civen us and could give employment employ-ment to every man among us The time p I believe will soon come when we can give employment to all wise are Dependent I even the aged suitable to their age so they I will not have to live on charity Our temples will do us no good if under their walls the poor call unto the Lord because their brethren will not help them The first presidency do not want to engug in temporal affairs but aro force to do so in order that Zion may bo built up dI I If our people will give up tbe ugo o r tobacco and other injurious things will observe tho Word of Wisdom end will put the money they thus save into building u pour p-our industries it will not bo long befor ewe e-we will see manufactories in every littl settlement and all our streams will turn wheels whose whir and hum will wako the world to tho fact that Utah has a people which is enterprising end industrious This course will give all our people work and iv e will soon seo that Zion thereby will be strengthened and built up and tho glad voices of her people will be heard in all parts and portions of the world I A o SSIOOT president of Utah stake Wo come to a conference for tho purpose of receiving spiritual ideas and if we act upon thoso ideas Zion will be strong I joined this church when I was a boy and I was induced duced to join by our venerable President Voodruff There are twice as many peo plo > in this audience as there were in the whole church at tho time I joined From that timo to the present I have been trying to promote the interests of Zion spiritually and temporally It has given me pleasure to know we could meet n brother and sister in every place and that there is good I ellowahip among this people IWo I-Wo came to this land and found it a I desert but tho Lord has caused tho desert I to blossom like a rose l I have done all I could to pour oil upon I the troubled political waters and I havo I taken the stand of a TheoKepubliDemo crat love my country but I do not want to seq the division as it IS producing a hatred among tho people of Zion Accord ng to slump speakers half of each party hnnlr1 hn In njnn Phn mnPA npl J uu UAU on the plan of the end justifies the means I have been sorely grieved at tho course of some of our brethren in politics I think as Brother Cannon that we should buildup build-up tho manufactories of Utah I think we should be united and no hasrh feelings creep in May God keep this church and help this people and Zion and may peace be > with Israel The Capstone Ceremonies President George Q Cannon then announced an-nounced that in the morning there would be > places set aside m the tabernaclo for all bo priesthood in accordance with the rank of each eo that all tho different priest hoods could bo together The services will L I be conducted in the tabernacle until about 1115 when tho first presidency followed L by the twelve then by the presidents of the first quorums of seventies and by the I priesthood In turn according to rank will lie out and go over to the and in regard to tho fact that the people of God have always been opposed and perse cuted by the world and as to the fact that the stronger the work gets the more oppo ition there will bo For that reosou he aid tbe members of the church need discipline disci-pline They should be a unit or the enemy will send an eternal wedge which will for some time stay the works of the church Though we have political division we should not have religious division B H ROBERTS Mormonism carries to the world a mighty warning In several of the early revela Ions it was said that this dispensation was t o bo a warning unto the people of the earth This varmng finds lifo in the actions of the elders who go abroad In several of our late revelations we find that after the sounding of tao warnings shall ome judgment of God and calamities shull alnujs follow in the footsteps of the llders if the people do not obey the warnings l warn-ings The Lord calls upon this peopln to sound the warning to the world by their flight from the other peoples of the world Iohn says that the Lord will In the last das call out his peoplo from Babylon so they will not receive of the plagues and sins of Babylon And John then predicts the calamities I want to say for tho encouragement encour-agement of the aged brothers and sisters who niiide tho perilous journey across the plains some in oxteams and some pushing handcarts that they did this by a decree of God and that in doing so they vrt re simply working out a warning from God to the world that the day of judgment was near When the capstone of the temple strikes on the rock beneath it tomorrow there will be struck a note whIch should vibrato and reverbra throughout all the nations of the world telling them that the last days are fast drawing near and warn ing them to come to God before It is too late Lot this warning take root IN CLOSING tho services the choir sang the anthem Heavenly Father ono of the most beau tiful pieces of music ever sung I
