tearing down rather than building up of dealing in mere nega tions teach of having nothing positive to In reply to these accusations he said in effect that what efect was positive or negative depended wholly upon the point of view To the Roman Catholic Protestantism is mostly negative while mosty negatve whie the evangelical protestant churches oount a negations all that is opposed I to their teaching No doctrine could be mentioned that is not a denial of something and to affirm one thing is to deny something else So i was said to be with the ideas of building up and tearing down What some men build Is the opposite of what others would build and so they call It disbelief tearing down or mere negation All depends negaton Al upon the pant of view Then coming to the things that Uni tarians are trying to build up the first was a belief in and a love of the truth Not everybody believes the speaker said in truth You will hear people say that the do pople they not wish to I read certain books or to investigate i certain subjects for fear they might lose their faith And upon all hands u it seems to be considered meritorious to keep the truth This means that tlu desire Is for comfort rather than I truth People are often heard saying I that they will allow no one to rob I them of their faith the true descrip tion of that state is that they stte are unwilling un-willing to learn what is true unless i t should be found to accord with their prepent convictions So i has hap pened that alVreformers I al reformers have been accused ac-cused of tearing down because their teaching does not accord with some established or popular belief The teaching of Jesus was tearing down In the < e3es of the Jews of the sacred faith established by Moses then hoary with dntiqulty and venerable i with time i It hath been said but I say was I wa his formula i and of course i ail I 1 seemed nega ion to the priest or Pharisee a i ulling down instead of I buildirg up The holy Sabbath day I he did not reverence he said i was I made for ma That is its usefulness Is was Its sanction not that God would i I be pleased t look down and see men idle Now tol build up a belief that the truth is always the best to buildup build-up a love of it that will leave the mind always pen Is no slight matter This Unitarians count this the frt point In their creed their first great affirmation The second point Is a be lief In man ahd a love of humanity We believe In the Improvability of all I sorts and conditions 01 men and a sincere pity for the unfortunate and I distressed a charity for the erring I make up the i sum of what is most worthy of the name of practical Christianity Je I practcal At tlje Tabsrnne The exercicsd were conducted by Elder El-der Angus M tIt nnon president of the stake The hmns ste mns commencing Behold Be-hold the mou taln of the Lord and tn Were not asttamed to own our Lord were rendered by the choir and prayer was offered by Elder George Whittaker Ihc priesthood of the Eighth ward b flclated in the administration adminis-tration of the acrament President T sph F Smith commenced com-menced his di course by referring to the good work I > slng done In the church university the log class The great thing needful t > all men i to gain the spirit which vi 1 lead them to think as God thinks foi the things of God are known only th ough the spirit of God The speaker cad from one of Pauls epistles Especially striking Is the part of this passage stating that the natural man cannot dl corn spiritual 1 tings for lf they seem foolishness unto Iir and are discerned dnly through the spirit I The discourse Delivered under the inspiration II in-spiration of thx proper spirit is convincing con-vincing to the spiritual minded but merely interest ng without conviction to him who is worldly minded Per i haps it is not lousy for some men to obtain the spirj of God even for some of those ivfeo h ive passed through the i ordinances necessary to obtain It for even members 4f the church of Christ may pass alongjfor years in their work in the churchjwithout having that snirjt which it Is their right to secure and retain Such may retain member membr ship in the church and yet b unable to secure a t simony of the truth of the pospej Without doubt many are in this condition now even those who have received i the priesthood The uroof of this may be found in the fact that many who have occupied prominent prom-inent positions in the church have run J well for a little season but have forsaken for-saken the truth thus proving that they j I have either received only a portion of I i the spirit and testimony of the gospel i or having received ia < fulness Stave j sinned so a to drive the spirit from them Sidney HIgdon for Instance In j mite of the visions he saw was constantly I j stantly making mistakes for which he was often chastised for he had not I I the spirit of discernment Hence when Joseph was taken away he claimed to I be the guardian of the church and < would have torn up the whole foundation founda-tion of the priesthood if i had not been otherwise directed He would not have made these mistakes If he had I nossessed the inspiration to which he was entitled His case is that of many others 1 j They who once had the testimony of i me trutn may lose it ana turn away from God unless they continue to merit the spirit of the Almighty by which to distinguish between truth and error I would seem strange that men who had associated so long with the Prophets Joseph Smith and Brigham Young can turn aside when left to themselves did we not know that depth of soul and the continued pres ence of the spirit of God are essential to constant faithfulness in the work of God I is possible for one to be under the dropping of the sanctuary and yet not understand the truth Mens object in receiving the ordinances ordin-ances of the gospel is to understand and appreciate l its truths and this can be done only by gaining the proper spirit to actuate the mind in learning and doing Knowledge alone is not enough for even Judas the traitor saw and understood as did the other apostles yet he did not profit by his understanding for the root of the matter was not in him and the spirit of God was absent Many others saw the miracles Christ performed yet they claimed that he was in league with Satan and hence worthy of death This apparently contradictory apparenty contrdicto sine was produced by the fact that they were wanting the spirit of his work Men are in the same condition today Not because the heavens are closed but because tVinit Vioovfe no nin < ni to the cry of Jesus Come unto me al ye that are weary and heavy lad enThe The mission of the Latterday Satnts Later 6Y is to proclaim to all men the promise of the spirit if they will comply with necessary conditions Yet men go without the companionship of the spirit thus promised and give way to their own carnal desires because they are surrounded by evil and are sc weak as to fall a prey to the powers of dari ness They only who are born of toe spirit spir-it will be able to understand tbs word of fled and those wm are outside this condition will only add 1t > their own condemnation if they listen to the word without attempting to understand under-stand aU obey it Had the Jw not been in a carnal and dark condition they could not have put the Savior to death and so it is with reference to the persecution of the Latterday Saints Laterday Men should seek the best gifts of the tll spirit that they may be led into all truth and not for their own glorifica tion The principle involved glorifca that all should hav the gifts of the spirt hat they may know that Jesus was slain for the sins of the world He who has not his gift Is in such a position that he is liable at any mo I ment to be tried beyond his strength for It is the right and duty of every man and woman of intelligence to know that Tesus was crucified for the crucifed sins of the world Without this the hearing of the word is of no avail for aa1 if one believes on the word of another his prop may be taken from him at any time and he will fall if he does not find another No one should rest until he is able to testify in all sincerity I I sin-cerity to the mission of Jesus Christ Everything written or spoken regard ing the gospel should be helps to bring about this knowledge they are not the end but merely the means to the atainment of the end All the varied gifts of the spirit mentioned men-tioned by Paul and the Prophet Joseph I Jo-seph Smith are essential to the Saints each being entitled to one and some I to all that there may be a head Without With-out these and without the practice of all virtues required of Saints none can be saved And even those who stand should take heed lest they fall as did Cain Judas and others who chose evil rather than good and were requited requit-ed with evil None of these was destined I des-tined to fall for the Lord gave to each an opportunity in his free agency I to choose the right and rejuct the wrong I Judas had eIzed this opportunity op-portunity Satan would have had to i find another to do the terrible act of betraying the Savior for Iscariot was not foreordained and forced to the deed The speaker closed with an earnest exhortation to his hearers to seek earnestly the best gifts especially that of understanding the things of God The cnolr sang Oh My Father President Wilfoid Woodruff bore his his testimony to the truth of the words of President Smith and said that the Prophet Joseph Smith said that all men shoud have the privilege of enjoy ing their own worship The Latterday Saints reiterate this and claim the same privilege Without two things no one can be saved the Holy Ghost and the holy priesthood for these have been upon the arth in all dispensations I of the gospel Under the inspiration of this spirit Adam called his children together and I blessed them by its influence and by it the Scriptures have been filled with I th word of God Under its direction the church of Christ has been organ i eedc glsOf nb I org ized in this day and all who have ministered in the ordinances in the II proper way have ministered and spoken under its influence Thus has I the work progressed to Its present position po-sition through the enjoyment of this spirit by each worthy individual connected con-nected with it it I The world does not appreciate the i salvation offered to it and hence the persecution of the Saints But these I cannot deprive a man of his salvation unless he gives way to them Hence thtfre is nothing to discourage the Saints Zion shall arise to glory and redemption and we shall arise with her If we resist the encroachments of the spirits of evil who follow the priesthood seeking to destroy as is shown by many of the experiences of the past Th choir and congregatlon sans We Thank Thee 0 God for a Prophet Proph-et Benediction by Elder William C Dunbar Church University Theology Class The class met at the appointed time I the exercises being commenced with prayer by Eider Sidney Clawson Instructor j I In-structor Talmage after answering sev j j oral incidental questions propounded by members of the class cpntjnued j the consideration of the fifth article of II j I faith Proceeding he stated As pointed out in the previous lesson it j is strictly in accordance with reason II that a man who officiates in the name of God must receive his authority for so doing from a divine source It I is true however that men have been able to Imitate the mighty works i I which God has done for the devil is also a person of power and endows his I I I followers with that which he pos ssesses Ve read that the mighty I miracles which were wrought by Moses and Aaron In the court of Pharoah were Imitated by the magicians of the I royal house yet in every case the < works of Moses and his brother were I j superior to those of the sorcerers and I j the power of God was thereby vindi caUd God does not recognize those who officiate in his name without the authority received from him though Ian I-an unauthorized man might immerse another in water In imitation of the baptismal ceremony yet such an acton I ac-ton would not be sanctioned in the heavens fand the man so baptized would not receive remission of his sins I God respects his servants who are clothed with his authority as well as I the works which they perform Said he iatJays of old Whatsoever ye bind on eatth shall be bound in heaven and j 0 whatsoever ye loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven That God not only does not recognize unauthorized administrations but that he punishes those who perform them or even have aspirations toward such is clearly shown in the cases of ICorlah and his associates Miriam Uzza and King Saul as recorded in the Bible The Instance of Uzziah king of the Jews who becoming filled with pride and puffed up with conceit went into the temple thinking because he was a king he had a right to administer In the things of God affords us a most terrible example of our heavenly fathers fa-thers righteous wrath at this trifling with his sacred ordinances For when Uzziah was about to reprove the priests who came in begging him to desist from such an unholy proceeding to change in his course ere i was too late he was stricken with that sign of leprosy in the forehead and those same priests who were his subjects in the kingdom of the Jews drove out i I their king from the temple as an accursed ac-cursed an unclean thing And King Uzziah dwelt apart from his household house-hold for the rest of his days while his son reigned in his tead Men have sometimes because of the simplicity of holy ceremonies and of i the language used In such attached j but little importance to them and have I thought they also could perform them1 I is said that the sons of I Sciva observing Paul do such mighty works by calling upon Christ I undertook to cast out an evil spirit from a mans body The spirit obeyed not theirl commands and answered them Jesus I know and Paul I know i i but who are ye And the man in I whom was the evil spirit leaped on I I them and overcame them and prevailed ed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded I is not enough that a man claim this authority he must possess I In the former days Peter James and John held the keys of the apostleship and these keys have been restbred in our day The priesthood with all its powers and gifts which they held they I conferred upon the head of Joseph Smith and through him those holding the priesthood among the Latterday Saints can trace their authority directly direct-ly to a divine source John the Bap fist by direction of these men bestowed I bestow-ed upon Joseph the Aaronlc priesthood with its powers just previous to this confirmation to the Melchesedik And thus we see that in all ages it has been necessary for men to receive divine di-vine commission to officiate in holy I places and perform holy ordinances President Joseph F Smith addressed the class for a few minutes dwelling dwelng I at some length upon the subjects of foreordinatlon and foredestination His remarks upon those subjects were of a most interesting character and were highly appreciated by all The exercises exer-cises of the class closed with prayer by Elder Reuben Clark The attendance I W very large there being about 1200 present |
