Show I A NEEDFUL MEASURE I r 11 o At I the last session of the Utah legis llat2Ve there was an effort made to pass i bin for the protection of the cattle I t jindustry It was not a protective jneasure in the Republican sense of the form 1 It was not In the nature of a jtariff duty a bounty or a bonus It fctfas intended for real and legitimate protection The measure was drawn up by a gen tteman of considerable experience in ah matters a practical veterinary Ulgfnn who had occupied responsible positions under the national government govern-ment as inspector It was designed to protect Utah stock and the Utah J1bl from diseased cattle horses np sheep and other animals im wrted Into the territory Strange to say It met with the great st opposition from the members from Ilral districts They were either pre udiced against the proposition or did ot understand it fully or imagined I 3 L UHcuutu iy > > amect theIr local in t > rests Ve hope there will be a revival of Jhp bill It was for a good purpose tah is as much exposed to the var ious kinds of diseases in animals which ar > brought in for sale here or are I mpnrted by home cattle and sheep pn to improve the breeds they have lis any other part of the country Their jhould be a proper inspection of such nimals and a competent person to iirdJct it VVe t suggest to our friends from the vv counties that this is a rightful lbj ct of legislation and that it is to interests of their constituents that f e diseases which have become com Ion I-on among horses cattle sheep and r rIne shall if possible be kept out I this territory And it would be a Pll 1C they look up the measure which ras i presented last session and see h L I I I 11 is not adapted to the needs of j tah whether as a territory or a r r > tr It may be however that the I hIlt Introduced b by Mr Varian by re sM wilt cover ail the necessary ounds If so it ought to be favorably ttdered and if found applicable to 1 public needs be made a law with Alt delay |
