Show Attorney Charles Otis Leaves New York Suddenly Sud-denly Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch1 NEW YORK April 18There was aflutter a-flutter amongthe officials of Kings county today when it was learned that Charles H Otis attorney for the public administrator had left sown Everybody was astounded that Mr Otis who is practically renting under changes of having paid money to a bogus heir in the celebrated case of Louisa Chester deceased should depart irom Brooklyn without giving notice to his friends and business associates There were also rumors afloat that the lawyer had severed his connection with the office before leaving Mr Otis took his wife and a large quantity of baggage and left for Chicago At his house today tne servant ser-vant girl admitted that Mr > and Mrs Otis had gone away to the west The lawyer was mucb agitated for hours before his departure de-parture and it is said that ho was busy all Saturday night in looking over legal documents docu-ments and packing his trunks The supposition suppo-sition is that Mr Otis started for Happy Camp Sisklyou county California for the purpose of procuring Additional affidavits from Henry C Chester the ciaSmaut to whom he paid the sum of 52417177 from the estate of Louise Chester This case was settled in May 1SSS and the remarkable circumstances connected with the matter have been published Only a few hours prior to his hasty departure Mr Otis talked to a reporter and made a sweeping denial of the revelations made recently Among other things ho attempted at-tempted to explain that although George B Abbott who was public administrator at the time the Louise Chester case was under consideration collected rents for the hcfuse at No 34 Poplar street for tho years 1583 S4 85 > SG S7 83 89 and 90 amounting to several hundred dollars ho Abbott acted properly in turninjrin this money to Surrogate Lott of that nerlooV |
