Order of Elks There was considerable activity In fraternal society circles last week and notwithstanding the many counter attractions at-tractions the attendances at the lodge meetings were very good and the amount of work done yery satisfactory Masonic Argenta lodge met in regular conclave con-clave on Tuesday vening with a fair attendance and transacted the usual business incidental to a regular meeting > meet-Ing Utah chapter No 1 met in stated conclave on Wednesday and Utah com mandery held its regular meeting on Thursday evening In both the business busi-ness was of a routine character The Eastern Star met in regular session ses-sion on Friday and did a large amount of business under the head of good of the order This week will be a busy one with the Masonic brethren Tonight Mount Moriah lodge will meet in regular session ses-sion The special conclave of Argenta is called for tomorrow evening for work On Wednesday the shrine will meet in regular session for Thursday evening a special conclave of the commandery Is called and on Friday Wasatch lodge will meet in regular session There Is also considerable work booked for < next week r o 0 PAt P-At the Sovereign grand lodge at Lookout mountain Chattanooga Tennessee Ten-nessee September 17 to 22 the following follow-ing officers were elected Grand sire John W Strebbins of New York deputy I dep-uty grand sire Fred Carleton of Texas Tex-as secretary Theo A Ross of New Jersey treasurer Isaac A Shepard of Pennsylvania At the same session the grand lodge resolved to meet Atlanta City N J next September The question of fixing the minimum amount of benefits and dues was postponed post-poned for another year A new code of laws for Rebekahs was adopted and hereafter ladles upon reaching the age of 18 years are eligible for membership member-ship whether their male relatives are Odd Fellows or not The grand lodge in its deliberations on the new code of law for Rebekah lodges declares the object and purpose of the Rebekah to be FirstAid In the establishment maintenance of homes for aged and indigent in-digent Odd Fellows and their wives or widows and homes for the care education edu-cation and support of orphans of deceased de-ceased Odd Fellows SecondTo visit the sick relieve the distressed and in every way to assist subordinate and sister ICebekah lodges in kindly ministrations to the families of Odd Fellows who are in trouble or want ThirdTo cultivate and extend the social and fraternal relations of life among lodges and the families of Odd Fellows The grand lodge then took un the report I re-port of the committee who recommended recommend-ed the appointment of a commission to locate and erect a suitable building for I the headquarters < of the order in Baltimore I Bal-timore After discussion the report was 1 indefinitely postponed The law requiring Canton tax was I repealed The report of the committee on the I PatriarchsMilitant was taken up Representative Rep-resentative Rixey of Missouri1 thought to amend the report by making all members of the Scarlet degree eligible for admission into the Patriarchs Militant Mili-tant but the proposition was defe ted t-ed The special committee on the reported report-ed misappropriation of funds in Fargo Dale reported that the Fargo local committee had received 13000 and disbursed to the brethren 8000 and that the disbursement was not to sufferers suf-ferers by fire but to those who were able to at once donate the same to their lodge to be used in payment of mortgages on lodge property The actual act-ual relief expended was only about 2200 and the balance was used as above The committee found that the action of the Fargo brethren was censurable cen-surable in the highest degree and ordered or-dered the grand lodge of North Dakota Dako-ta to at once see that all money not given to relieve actual distressthe original purpose of the call7be at once returned to the donors The Sovereign grand lodge reported adverse to giving a lodge the rigt to deduct any and all indebtedness of a brother from his funeral benefits The resolution to dQ away with regalia and wear in lieu thereof a badge was defeated de-feated A uniform plan of action on memorial memor-ial services to be followed by all subordinate sub-ordinate bodies on Memorial Day was adopted The attempt to change the date of the annual Memorial Day was defeated tThe committee of its oldest members mem-bers Brother Alex Berryman who died on Thursday last after an illness of many months Oquirrh Encampment received a most flattering report from Its scribe B W E Jennens of the transactions of the term just ended IJights of Pytliias The week with the disciples of Damon I and Pythias was replete with good work and splendid meetings On Monday evening Calanthe lodge held its usual I meeting at which the rank of page was conferred on J B Tttoreton Frank I Stevens and TL B Whittemore and E I C Evans was admitted by card The I work was done in firstclass style and a truly fraternal time enjoyed Myrtle Lodge No 1 had a well attended at-tended convention on Tuesday evening Supreme Representative Farnsworth was present and gave a report of his visit to and the business dohe during the session of the supreme lodge at Washington D C Ellis and Goodwin have made a group photograph of the officers of this lodge which will in future adorn the walls of the castle hall The picture shows the officers of Myrtle to be the fine intelligent men which they are Monitor No 11 convened on Monday with a fair attendance Two applications applica-tions to join were received and will be acted upon at the next meeting Rocky Mountain No 3 had a well attended meeting on Thursday evening It was with regret that the members received the resignation of John Berry as Vice chancellor Brother Berrys business interests compel him to leave this city and hence his resignation was accepted There are several aspirants as-pirants for the position in the field and the election will take place at the next meeting of the lodge on Thursday even lug ing1The The Salt Lake division of theuniform I rankheld its regular business meeting J on Friday evening and transacted business busi-ness of importanceto every one of the rank It is intended to hold regular drills during the winter months and at the next session of the grand lodge prize drills will be had when Salt Lake division intends carrying off the first premium The Order of Elks This order is making more than satisfactory sat-isfactory progress since its reorganization reorganiza-tion in this city It now numbers among Its members many of our best citizens and is adding desirable names to its roster every week Salt Lake lodge met on Tuesday evening and enjoyed a pleasant and profitable time Professor John P Mea Jdn and Mr McKernan were initiated After the initiatory ceremonies Mr Meakin was called on for a speech It is perhaps surperfluous to say that iMr Meakins address was appreciated and applauded He gave a talk which was eloquent instructive pathetic and witty His theme was friendship justice Jus-tice and brotherly love and he did justice to hs subject Mr Meakin is a decided acquisition to the order I |
