Show ROAD REFORM The suggestion made by = The Herald on Saturday last that the streets leading lead-ing to the depot be macadamized and that the chief road leading to and from the city be placed in good traveling condition seems to meet with popular favor The unemployed workingmen at their meeting on Tuesday adopted a resolution endorsing it and other papers besides The Herald are taking it up approvingly If the two streets chiefly used for traffic to and from the Union Pacific and Rio Grande Western depots were macadamized that is South Temple and First South streets it would set to work a number of men who are restless and almost riotous from their desperate condition The work would demonstrate the utility of the macafl am process in this city Properly done the streets fairly rounded up the stone being broken to the regular size we believe it will be shown that macadamizing macad-amizing is the right thing for those streets which we cannot yet afford to pave with asphaltum All our county roads need work to put them into passable order The State road should above all be put into good condition We notice that experiments are being tried with slag for road repairs It is probable that it can > be utilized to good advantage Something more than ordinarily graveling grav-eling is a necessity for the result inmost in-most instances has been mud in wet weather and dust in dry because the gravel gravitates from the surface and the loose earth comes on top If anything in these directions is to be done by the city or county or both now is the time to do it The work is needed as a public requirement and as the laborers necessity Let there be no delay Give men employment instead of soup and a chance to earn what they need instead of lowering their manhood by making them dependent depen-dent upon charity Road reform is wanted right now and so is bread for the unemployed |
