Show S LOOKING FOR WORK The Joint Building Committee Still Besieged With Men With each succeeding week the num wecJ ber of men out of employment increases in-creases and in consequence Selectman Bamberger aJnd Councilman Watson of the joint city and county building committee the employment committee which has charge of the employment of men and teams for the work of grading the square which surrounds the joint building are being overwhelmed over-whelmed with applications for employment employ-ment Yesterday was the regular day for the change of shifts and fully 750 men crowded in front of the selectmans office on West Temple street Nearly all of them were registered but they were forced to take their regular turns and but eightythree were given work cards which entitles them to work when the change takes place this morn Ing In addition twentyfive teams were given employment I was a good natured crowd although al-though the marks of suffering were very apparent The services of several policement were required to keep the walk clear and prevent crowding when the door of th office was opened for the admission of a small number of men at a time The poor feUows crowd just as much when the change of shifts occur for the boulevard work although they only receive half the per diem as on the grading Selectman Bamberger is puzzleing his brain over two or three plans whereby the army of the unemployed may be still further reduced He is asking the cooporation of the city council and seems likely to succeed Under existing conditions it is one continual nightmare He is always surrounded with applicants for work and even the privacy of his home is not regarded by the searchers for work and charity The gentlemans span of life will be materially shortened if relief ter is not obtained from some quar |
