Show PRESBYTERIANS AT SARATOGA Question of a Common Standard of Doctrine Discussed Saratoga May 101n the Presbyterian general assembjy today a resolution was adopted by a rising vote with applause providing for the appointment of a committee com-mittee to consider the question of organization organi-zation with the southern church on a basis of common standards and doctrines held by both bodies The clerks were au V i l = = N s thorized to send fraternal greetings to the southern Presbyterian church at Nashville the Cumberland church Eugene Or and the United Presbyterian church Albany Or Elder John McCook of New York was appointed moderator The subject of a theological seminary was taken up Dr William C Young chairman of the committee explained the provisions of the majority report which he claimed gave the widest liberty to the seminaries and still secured the right of the assembly t direct and control them The legal questions Involved were discussed by Thomas McDugal of Cincinnati Cincin-nati He said there was no reason why a church may jiot prescribe the terms upon which the seminaries should be received re-ceived Dr William E Moore explained the report of the minority Previous decisions of the assembly he said have been quite the opposite of that now proposed The minority did not wish to bring In the civil power when our own power Is sufficient tOF meet the requirements Further consideration of the subject was postponed until Monday |
