Show TRUSTED CLERK AND DEFAULTER Edward S Carter of the National T Bank of Commerce Arrested HE TOOK THiRTY THOUSAND PPRESIDEXT VV TV SflERiLiX MAKES A STATElIEST The JJQHH is Not SerJona Carter Start cii ns n Messenger Boy Confeiscd His Guilt Expert Accountants Examine City Treasurer Adams Accounts ot Broolclyn He is Short yearly JTinety Thousand TJollars Serious Discrepancy in Cashier Tenieys Accounts New York Dec 26 Edward R Carter transfer and coupon clerk at the National Nation-al Bank of Commerce No 29 Nassau street was arrested this afternoon as a defaulter Carter Is charged with appropriating appro-priating J300COO of the banks money and it Is said confessed Ms guilt He Is 4t years old He lived with his wife and two children child-ren a daughter 22 years old and a son 12 years old in Brooklyn For twentynine years Carter had been in the employ of the bank According to the story he told to the jpolice he began his peculations two years ago at first taking only small sums He would say very little aoouc blnvself to the police and maintained silence si-lence as to what Induced him to take the money and what he did with it To the bunk officials he was not so reticent asa as-a statement of W W Sherman president presi-dent of the bank shows The statement is as follows The National Bank of Commerce has sustained a defalcation by its transfer and coupon clerk Edward R Carter amounting to 30000 Carter began as a messenger boy being promoted from time to time till he reached his present position Among his other duties he was required to receive all pay coupons and maturing or culled bonds On comparing a balSuice this morning the officers discovered dis-covered a discrepancy of some 28OCO Which he accounted for by claiming to have paid In error that amount of bowls before their maturity When asked to produce the bonds he was unable to do so and admitted his guilt It was not learned that he speculated or indulged In any vices He claimed to have used the money in his living expenses The loss of course is not a serious one for the bank Which has a capital of S3 COO 000 and a surplus and undivided profits of J3owjo00 but the defalcation Is none the less distressing as Carter had the confidence of all who came In contact with him Beyond this official statement no officer of the bank would say anything about the matter city Treasurer Adams Short Brooklyn N Y Dec 26The World tomorrow will say Expert accountants have been going over the books m City Treasurer Adams office Their report which will be presented to the board shows a commissioners today of county total shortage of S9649 Of this 6o 549 was found In the accounts of the treasurer treas-urer A discrepancy of 24400 is shown In the amounts drawn by Cashier L T Termcy for the payment of Furies This discrepancy discrep-ancy Is against Termey |
