| Show HONORS ARE EASY Salt Lake Won Both of Yesterdays Yester-days Races Tho Attendance Dwindled Down to n Few Dozen Spectators mid here Was Little Enthusiasm There is any amount of dissatisfaction among the members of the Salt Lake club ovor the outcome of the regatta and the Provo club to speak it mildly is disgusted dis-gusted There was a screw loose somewhere the management but the chivalry of the men would not permit them to attach the blame to any particular source for they tall t-all concede that it was an error of the head rather than of the heart I The Salt Luke club is made up of as fnc a set of men as can bo picKed out of 50000 and from tie captain down are excellent fellows Pity it i that there was not tho necessary preparation and advertising to make this an event in amateur aquatic au nals Instead of a few dozen people there ought to have been several thousand spectators spec-tators cheering the winners to the echo f The regatta at Detroit and other cities are the occasions of the rarest fun and the fashion ot the city turna out Those who have seen the shores lined for miles with pretty women ned handsome men waving theIr parasols and hats high in the air and tho sea of white handkerchiefs handker-chiefs can hardly excuse the sullen indifference indif-ference 01 the people here Yesterdays contests were tame and inconsequential in-consequential Tnoro were two races by I the senior and junior learns of both clubs j i Captain John Pike of the Provo club i I was tee general director of ceremonies and he is to bo credited with a large nmout of the work which bas worked up the Provo club to its present efficiency The first race was a fouroar scull race I by juniors The Salt Lake team was as follows Peabody bow Shearmansecond I Bailey third Westervelt atroao The Provo club had toe following oarsmen men Wediewood bow King No 3 Os borno No3 Graves stroke A good start was had ooth clubs pulling even oars in fine shape At the turn they were nearly even the Salt Lakers slightly leading and hlding this advantage to the outcome The water was just rough enough to be nasty The time made over the one and cno half mile course was 1011 I The senior crews were as follows Salt LakePeabody bow Bailey second Deoj little third Westervolt stroke I Provo Wilaon boW Graves second Markham third Smithstroke I I In this race the home club again led to tho turn gliding pat the Map in fifteen seconds sec-onds ahead of the Proves The race home was well contested both crews rowing abreast until they were opposite the pavil1 ion when by a spirited spurt the home club I came in winner in 955 The result of the two days races gives the Provoa two races and the Sait Lakers the same number racking a tie and honors easy This will make the contest to tako place on Utah lake Monday next all the more exciting ex-citing |
