| Show EEIDBLICAN DESPERATION If one will examine the apportionment under which the presidential election will be held in November he will understand the uneasiness of the Republicans over the apparent strength of the third party It will be easy enough to comprehend why the followers of HARRISON are coaxing so earnestly to get the Populists back into line and telling them that a vote for WEAVER is a vote in tbe interest of CLEVELAND CLEVE-LAND It is observed that nowhere are the Democrats worrying over the operations of the third party people It is not because the latter are not working just as bard ii Democratic states as in Republican but for the reason that the fight of the Populists is against Republican rule and methods The Republicans are anxious for the reason that they can afford to lose no states which have heretofore been counted as belonging to the party and the Democrats are content for the reason that these states are not needed by them There arc twentynine electoral votes which are liable to be cast for Mr WEAVER and all of them have heretofore been counted in the Republican column Not ono of the twentynine has bean estimated in any Democratic computation Now the Republicans cannot lose these votes although al-though tbe Democrats do not gain them without also losing tho election That is to say the contest in the event of the Dtmocrats losing New York and Indiana would be thrown into tbe House where the Democracy have a majority of the representatives from thirty of the fortyfour states thus insuring the election elec-tion of Mr CLEVELAND It therefore stands the HARRISON people in hand to work quite as hard to keep Kansas Nebraska Ne-braska Colorado Nevada and Idaho as it does to retain Iowa VJiconsin and Illinois for the three last named will not elect if the others are carried off by WEAVER On the other hand the Democrats if they were so disposed could confine themselves to states which are certain including New York However certainty of electing elect-ing their candidate is not enough for the Democracy this year The party is walking right into the enemys territory the manifest intention being to make the triumph so complete and overwhelming that Republicanism will be crushed beyond hope of restoration Illinois Illi-nois Wisconsin and Iowa are Democratic fighting ground and Idaho Wyoming and Montana are to be brought into the field simply because it can ba done |
