Show I CUTTING lJOWNTIME A Big Advantage to Readers of The Herald ONE HOUR EARLIER NORTH Two Hours Earlier in the Sanpete and Sev Icr ItcRion Garfield Beach Improvements Improve-ments General Eallway News The changes in the railroad timetables which go into effect on Sunday morning next will make the morning newspapers rustic but they will be a groat benefit to out of town readers of Salt Lake papers In Ogden where Tim KERAID is the only I f Salt Lako paper delivered by carriers its i readers will bo able to hare it at their breakfast tables or almost as early as it is delivered in Suit Lako The Ogden and eastern train will Joavc at 6 oclock instead of7 and the papers for O den all points between here ana that place Denver and I Wyoming newsdealers packages and all papers for eastern cities must be in the postoffice wrapped and directed by 320 oclock The run to Ogden will be made in just one hour to connect with the Union Pacific which leaves for the east at 7 Mails for the north will leave an hour earlier than usual which will put TUB HERAID in the hands of its Idaho readers t a full hour earlier In Pocatollo and Boise where the paper is also delivered by cart car-t riers the change will be duly appreciated I All polnta in Sovlerand Sanpete counties on the line or near the Sevier Valley branch of the Rio Gruude Western will I also be greatly taonentted by a change in I time that cooa into into effect on May 1 The Rio Grande Western train from the I west which now leaves Salt Lake at 950 i will go out at S dahverjug Inn HEUALW to the faanpala and Sovllt valley readers and I aU points south and east of Thistle nearly two hours earlier than at present I The mrll for Montana idaho Washington 1 Washing-ton and Oregon points will go out at 920 am instead of 3o25 as now Tua eastern oveniay mail train will leave at 030 Instead ol 0 Prom the east the fast mail will arrive at 3 l am iufctead of 4 sai Shaffers Railway II W T Shaffer of Evanston Wyo the I I inventor of what is now known as I Shaft railway was in Salt Lake for a short time yesterday en route home j Mr Snallers invention if successful and I of this he claims there can be no doubt Will revolutionize railway travel It is II designed said Mr Sheller to carry passengers mail and light express packages pack-ages between populous points The car is I 10 be used in connection with a single ele vated rail placed upon posts said posts being connected near their tops by substantial 1 substan-tial framework surmounted by a top I plate sustaining the rail On each side of this row of posts a few feet below the top I ie placed a guide rail the face or bearing I surface of which stands in a position at j right angles with the face of tho top rsil The guide rails can be of much lighter steel than the top rail as they I sustain 20 direct weight but simply steady the car As will be seen by the accompanying accom-panying illustration the car is in two main i compartments suspended on either side of the upper rail These two main com part I meats are connected by a cupola which latter forms a third small compartment For passengers the car has one row of double seats next the windows and the isle or passage way is next to the inner wall This aisle in each main compartment compart-ment is connected with the cupola by a short stairway on either side thus giving free access to all parts of the car The weight of the car is carried by two trucks of two wheels each ns shown in the illustration illus-tration These main carrying wheels are I double flanged tho space between the flanges being a trifle wider than tho face of the rail to allow for rounding I curves These trucks are provided with regular journal boxes oil cups and springs Tho tracks are surmounted with a pivoted turret which allows all side I motion necessary in rounding any ordinary ordin-ary curve and over and through these tur T n to loA nvtr Turniiirht Ktccl arms are sus pended and to these < arms the car is firmly I attached and suspended Underneath tho I car on each side ara two guide wheels which stands at right angles with the upper wheel and run upon two lower or guide rails to steady tho side motion of the car These guide i wheels press firmly upon their respective rails but are provided with short strong springs fn their boxes so as to allow them to yield slightly in rounding curves You do not intend that it shall be used for carrying heavy freights then 1 No But my idea is that the demand for greater speed in carrying passengers mail etc between populous towns calls for a different style of transportation than that at present in use What speed do you claim The wheels can be built at least three times the diameter of the present car wheels therefore the same number of revolutions of the present car wheel necessary neces-sary to carry a train fifty miles an hour would carry this car 150 I believe hat with a wellbuilt track n speed of 200 miles per hour can be attained with more comfort com-fort and greater safety than present roads running at fifty miles per hour Thfl Union Pacific Heetintr ToDay The Union Pacific directors meet in New York today and the action taken will decide de-cide whether the Union Pacific is to build the Piocho extension this year or next It is believed that the extension will be ordered or-dered and the proceedings of the magnates will DO
