Show A DAMAGING DELUGE Walker Bros Tylers Store Flooded A Bur t Water Pipe Spreads Consternation Conster-nation Among the Clerks Costly Fabrics Ruined The young lady clerks at Walker Bros Fylers were smiling over the various counters at a good line of customers to whom they were exposing ladys underwear un-derwear and other trappings of feminine gear esterday afternoon when without warning a torrent of water broke through the iron ceiling and created confusion and consternation among the girls and sad havoc among the fine fabrics Miss Miller the head lady of the cloak department was strictly in the swim and before she could say Ugh was soaked from head to foot The other girls screamed with fright and cried at the tops of their sweet voices Mercy on usl Mr Fyler flew around at a lively rate and in his excitement is said to have ordered one of the clerks to call out the fire department to put out the water though this is perhaps somewhat watered It was no joke forthedamage could not have been made if the fire department had turned out a half dozen line of hose on the precious counters and shelves loaded with furs cloaks and silks For a time it looked as if the entire store would be deluged and had not some level headed person turned the stop cock which cuts the water supply off the basement would have soon filled up The cause of the break was the freezing of one of the water pipes which was not sufficiently protected frcm the frost As soon as this check was relieved the water rushed with such great force into the waste pipe that it burst it apart The break occurred in the ceiling above the cloak department and the pressure was so great that the water broke through one of the iron panels of the handsome metallic ceiling Outside of the damage done to the goods on the main floor such as furs cloaks etc the loss to muslins and underwear stored in the basement is also great and Mr Fyler estimates the damage at several thousand dollars which fortunately fortu-nately covered by insurance |
