Show PRODUCTS OF TIlE MINES Utah Will Show Almost Every Mineral That Is Mined Throughout central and western Utah there exist immense bodies of high grade iron ore which in states further east would have long since grown into valuable valu-able property At Willard twelve miles north of Ogden there are very extensive mines of both red specular and hemetite ore as also of magnetite These are quite free from phosphorous and sulphur In Ogden canyon at Strawberry gulch leading into Weber canyon and also in Hard Scrabble canyon lenmonite ores are very abundant In Tintic mining district what is known as the Degon mine has been worked for years its product pro-duct being used as flux for smelting lead ores In southern Utah the iron mines of Iron county are very extensive and range as an iron ore from very good to inferior Collectively there is no western state or territory whose iron mines are more extensive ex-tensive than those of Utah Some years since a Wisconsin party organized an iron company at Ogden The works were started and about one hundred and twenty tons of iron of a superior quality were produced The property however falling into the hands of Colorado parties the works were shut down and remain so unto this day QUICKSILVER At Camp Floyd there exists extensive deposits of cinnabar or sulphate of mercury in what is known as the Mercury mine but up to the present no attempt to produce the metal has been made At Marysvale eel inide of mercury was discovered some years ago but although rich no great returns re-turns were ever obtained from the mine That pi operty might now be made very profitable if worked BISMUTH 7 > < f Bismuth has been found in considerable quantities at amount isa ay some twenty years ag where the 0 Connell brothers done some work on a mine of that metal but one of these men having been killed by Indians the property has never since been worked and at present it isa ruin MOLIBDENUM West of Deseret in the low hills considerable consid-erable quantities of molibdenum are found associoted with lead ores no use made of it up to the present S ARSENIC In Bingham canyon great quantities of arsenic exist almost pure and associated with sulphur and what is known as real at the mine of the creek It is quite abundant abun-dant south of Bear gulch in Bingham canyon SULPHUR Utah could supply the world with this mineral It lies in inexhaustible quantities quan-tities on the San Raphiel river also in Rabbit valley also twelve miles south of Frisco also at St George and at Cove Creek Branch Fork where a German company bus been manufacturing it for export these past ten years NITRATE OF POTASH is found in considerable quantities at Spragues Cliffs in Weber county about sixteen miles from Ogden also near Cedar City in Iron county and some in Millard county west of Deseret No use has been made of this up to present writing NITRATE OF SODA is foundin considerable quantities along Green river and also on the south branch of the Dirty Devil river in Wayne county SULPHATE OF MAGNESIA Sulphate of magnesia is quite plentiful in the Green River canyon north of Blake also on the Deloros river No use has been made of this up to ths present Manganese abounds in considerable quantities in an almost pure state on the north branch of the south fork of the Ogden riverand is associtaed with iron in many parts of Utah As an industry it has up to the present attracted no attention although very abundant MAGNESIA is found in extensive beds throughout eastern Utah along the Duchesne river and on Green river also in the highlands near LaPlata not mined yetin Utah SALT One of the most common minerals in Utah for along with the abundance that may be drawn from the water of Great Salt lake it is found in great beds in Sevier Iron and Washington counties where in an impure state it is mined and sold as stock salt or dIssolved in water boiled and converted into confmercial saltAt At Salina the mines and manufacturer of salt is quite an important industry while at Salt Lake the Inland Salt company com-pany produce an article equal in all respect to Warsaw or Liverpool salt at about onehalf the price of those imported products TRIPOLITE Tripohte is found in many parts of Utah there exists an extensive vein in Millard county where it extends for several sev-eral miles showing up as a stratification in the limestone but this is yet unutilized unuti-lized S SILICA in a soft state is abundant in Sevier county also in Weber co aty and along the Duchesne river as yet unutilized ASBESTOS exists in paying quantities in Beaver county where it lies in veins and will at no distant day t doubtless be mined and manufactured in Utah As yet no attention atten-tion has been given to it MICA is found in Box Elder county in Weber county and in Beaver county No labor or money has yet been spent upon it Extent and value unknown quality very good KAOLIN Abundant in the 500 foot level of Bullion Bul-lion and Beck and at Eureka also near r i > I CO N I Willard also four miles northeast of I Ogden j ROCKINGHAM CLAY I I Abundant along the east shore of Great Salt Lake east of Ogden also west of Willard near Brigham City and at Little Lit-tle Hound Mountain twelve miles west of Ogden Makes an excellent potters clay but little used as yet in Utah BORAX I In undetermined quantities in marshes I near Blue Creek on promonotory and also I of the great desert west of Grantsville BUILDING STONE I sand stone county rock of almost aU of S eastern Utah Excellent quarries at Diamond Creek and Kyune on the Denver Rio Grande Western Diamond Creek a rich red and clear of faults Kyune a I rich gray with dark waves a very fine I stone of a brown color quarried at Croy I den on the main line of the Union Pacific railroad Also a rich cream colored sandstone sand-stone near Coalville Fine slabs of sandstone sand-stone for pavement at various places in Sanpete Seveier and Summit counties also in Wayne and Duchesne Quantities unlimited A white silicious stone is abundant in Sanpete county and lso a rich limestone in same locality magnesian in quality used much there in building Of this the temple at Manti was erected Easily quarried and inexpensive to dress Granite Gran-ite is abundant in Little Cottonwood twenty miles from Salt Lake city Of this the Mormon temple at Salt Lake is constructed used also in many other buildings throughout Utah a very fine building stone abundant and works well takes a good polish SYENITE Abundant at many points along the base of the upper Wasatch range not worked as yet in Utah A magnificent rock for monuments MARBLE Plentiful near Frisco also east of Big Cottonwood also in Sevier county and a large body near Kanorrah not worked to any extent as yetONYX ONYX Of late discovered at many places in Utah At Pelican Point west of Utah Lake Some found in Cache county Very good quality in Weber county east i Ogden A deposit in the lime measures meas-ures near La Plata and in various other parts of Utah This makes a very handsome hand-some decorating stone when polished and exists in Utah in all colors from colorless white to very dark brown Worked but little as yet I TASPER Abundant east of Green river at a point eight miles south of Denver Rio Grande Western railroad Not worked as yet SLATE A very good qualitv of slate is found east of Provo also near Willard and some in American Fork canyon Worked but little as yet Quite abundant also Buck Antelope and Freemont Islands a mi cacious slate in Great Salt Lake LIMESTONE Abundant throughout the Wasatch range Easy of approach at Springville Provo Salt Lake and Ogden Also in Oquirrh range Also all ranges of western west-ern Utah makes excellent lime for large dimension stone in public buildings or for architecture not too irregular and f all of checks LAVA AND AMYGDALOID abundant in southwestern Utah Very good building stone easily worked and very abundant GEMS The topaz is found in great variety in the western part of Millard county about twenty miles from Deseret mined but little as yet quality very good shades Dink yellow white brown and light blue Garnets are found in San Juan county also in superior quality on Birch creek Weber county and also east base of Henry mountains Malachite in spare quantities at Cop perepolis mine Tintic Crystallized quartz at various places in Utah fit for gems eight miles east of Willard Utah opalized abundance in San Juan countv Opals of fair quality ten miles east of Park City class known as water opals shade yellow and pale blue I Opalized wood in Washington county also on Green river and along the Virgin river Jasper in San Juan county also near Moab and three miles south of Green i River station I Moss agate gray and brown along Greed river at Kanorrah also on the Virgin river quality very good COAL I The greater part of eastern Utah overlies over-lies coal measures little of which have yet been developed In Summit San Pete Piute Uintah and Wayne counties mines have been opened and a very profitable industry established es-tablished in the mining of coal for central and western Utah The product is largely bituminous and the thickness of veins is usually great The D R G Western R R at Pleasant Valley and Castle Gate have opened an extensive industry in mining coal and making coke These mines are conducted on the most improved im-proved plan having an electric railway in operation several miles into the mines and the mines lighted by electricity The Union Pacific Railway company also has mines worked near Pleasant valley and i also at Coalville Summit county The coal fields of Utah are sufficient to supply I the inhabitants of Utah for ten centuries allowing for all of the improvements of that time and also increase in population PETROLEUM is abundant in eastern and southeastern Utah springs at various points along Green river below Blake also on Uintih Indian reservation near White Rocks I agency not utilized as yet GILSOMITE a chemically pure asphaltum is found in great abundance and mined in Uintah county From there it is shipped to Eng land France Germany Baltimore Md St Louis Mo usedi n the arts as I well as in the manufacture of pavement The common asphaltum of commerce is abundant in many parts of eastern Utah also near White Rocks agency Uintah I county and has been mined tor some time near Thiste Utah county ELATERITE which is a mineral rubber is found inconsiderable in-considerable quantities near Soldier summit sum-mit also in Uintah county PARAFINE OR MINERAL WAX is found in considerable quantities on the Uintah reservation and in a large body near Soldiers Summit north of the Denver Den-ver Rio Grande Western railroad LIGNITE is quite plentiful in Lower NineMile canyon can-yon also along Green river ALBERTITE is found in Wayne county also in northeast north-east Sanpete county and in spariugquant ities in Uintah county Soda springs abound along Green river but are as yet not utilized NATURAL GAS has been discovered in Salt Lake valley near Salt Lake also west of Ogden on the lake also on the lake shore near Brigham City Up to date this great force has not been utilized although several companies have been organized at Salt Lake and in Ogden ANTIMONY Among the metals I should have enumerated enum-erated antimony which is found of a very high grade at Coyote creek Piute county coun-ty and PLUMBAGO is found of a very good quality fifteen miles north of Frisco Beaver county as yet but little worked SELENITE is found in the largest and most beautifu crystals about four miles north of Dirty Devil river in Wayne county and also near the Henry mountains At these places tho largest crystals of this substance sub-stance yet found in America exist some seven feet in length and clear as crystal COMMON GYPSUM is abundant in Juab Sevier Piute Wayne and Uintah counties and this 6 c 5r 1 makes a superior plaster At Nephi only is it manufactured finding a very good market in the territory and beyond ALUM is found in many places in Utah the most abundant spot being between Ogden and Willard where several large dykes give it forth inconsiderable quantity As yet it has never beenworked I f S ALUMINUM i I is found in the clays of western Utah and I croyolite in Hercules canyon twelve 1 miles north of Ogden Not worked as yetI yet-I MINERAL PAINT exists in the iron fields of Iron county also in Juab county A rich yellow ironS iron-S sulphide in Hercules canyon produces a most excellent paint when burnt but little prepared as yet in Utah i GLASS SAND I is found at many points in the Great Basin but as yet not used to any considerable consid-erable extent I BRICK CLAY suitable for brick of any shadefrom dark 1 i red to pure white is abundant in most S parts of Utah Near Ogden the black soils are excellent for red brick j UTAIIS REDUCTION WORKS Where the Gold Silver and Other Ores Are Treated Twelve miles south ol Salt Lake city are situated the Sandy smelters for the treatment S treat-ment of local ore and six miles south of Salt Lake aresituated the Hanauer smelt I I ing works The Mackintosh sampling I works are situated at Sandy These three establishments each do a large business in the handling and treatment of Utah i i Nevada Idaho and Montana ores These i alone with an establishment in Salt I i j Lake are the only works in Utah for the treatment of ores save those situated near the mines in Park City and the copper works in Dixie southern Utah I |
