Show AT PARK CITY History and Present Condition of the I Leading Mines ft In Park City where the greatest I 4 amount of work done in any of the camps 4 of Utah is now being carried on days I I + labors were extended to the collection of an exhibit from the Ontario Daly Cresent Anchor Silver King the Lion i mine the California Glencoe Mayflower Woodside and Daly West The formation at Park City is largely quartzite flanked on either side by limestone In either of i these formations tremendous bodies of ore have been found I THE ONTARIO A2H3 DALY r f The Ontario a mine whose fame is t worldwide was discoveyed in the year 1870 and in the year 1S72 was sold for the sum of 532000 the purchasers being Hearst Nevis and Haggin of San Francisco + Fran-cisco As an ore producer since that time it has been surpassed by few mines t in the world Up to date this mine has turned out to the stockholder about 14 S 000000 in dividends and when we call to r mind the tremendous expense required to work it the profits prove it to be first among the great mines of North America As to the method of work and development develop-ment of this great property a visit to the interior workings and the reduction works situated in Park City show the visitor what great strides have been taken r in the science of mining during the past fifty years In the Ontario and Daly mines worked by one company all that t modern science and skill can do to develop mi de-velop a mine and leave the same safe for the miner and profitable for the stockholders stock-holders has been done In the Ontario the main vein running t through quartzite is flanked on either R > side by veins running out from the main body into the quartzite so that we may I say there is a network of veins checking 1 otf the district of quartzite that lies in tnat r region The nature of the ore varies being be-ing in some workings high grade galena lead ores in other chloride and in others black sulpherets of silver all running 1 high in silver A small percentage of copper accompanies accom-panies most of the ores of tho Ontario and Daly mines This is of course worked up with the general product t Work has been carried on down to the 1500foot level and the entire amount of workings including shafts and tunneling tunnel-ing would fall little short of 100 miles in length The machinery used in this great mine is of the most improved pattern Tho pumping machinery used to drain the mine from the 1500foot level to the surface sur-face is not surpassed in that of any other mine the world This system of pump ing leaves the drainage of this mine perfect per-fect and the ventilation is equally good The county in which the Ontario is situated situ-ated being on the eastern slope of the Wa satch mountains receives and retains for a great part of the year a tremendous snowfall leaving the earth like a sponge This necessitates continuous pumping and continuous timbering Day and night the work of sending down heavy timbers into these deep workings goes on dav and night these immense pumps with their complicated machinery go forward for-ward raising the water from the lower levels Month in and month out the great pump rod one thousand feet In length and eighteen inches in diameter rises and falls as a small river is poured out through the discharge pipes of the mine into the head waters ol the Weber river riverThe Ontario and Daly mines constitute a practical mining school for the young man who desires to become acquainted with that industry in its most interesting and difficult branches There he may study and learn how to control the most treacherous ground There he may learn how to drain ground that in other lands would be considered hopeless and there lie can study the formation of veins as eeen in few mines of the world Utah may well be proud of this mineral prospect the wealth of which hr 1e BO many fortunes and the name of has been linked with that of Ut n ai the world I may here in place make i ntion 01 tho man whoso generalship H I I 7 V J r 4 < q I much to make this great mine what it is R C Chambers who for twenty years I has managed so successfully the workings of the Ontario deserves a place among the mine managers of the age When we call to mind the small army of employees under his charge the great extent of the work 1 I in his care the network of difficulties I I I that for twenty years has beset him in I making this great mine pay we can then well understand why he has so long rc I tained thelsuperintendency of the Ontario company Up to date the output of the Ontario and Daley mines runs up to 16000000 avery a-very creditable showing for one property in nineteen years THE ANCHOR I After the Ontario up to this writing we may place the Anchor property as the most extensive in the Park City group of mines This company own an Immense extent of property west and southwest of the great OntarioDaly syndicate They own and control In all about seventy mining claims the formation of which I most of their property lies in limestone I carrying large bodies of ore and the splendid work of development carried on for the past two years has now left this a well prospected and well drained prop erty The dawn of its glory may be said to have barely emerged Henceforth we may look for a large output of ore from the mines of this company a well gained I jcn < uu lui tut jjiuun uuu liuivt buuwii uy them in the development work of their ground THE SILVER KING During the autumn of 1892 the Silver King opened up its treasures to the lucky owners Kieth Rice Judd Kerns and Emery The Silver King may be considered con-sidered one of the best properties Utah large bodies of high fade lead and silver ore have been struck increasing at a wonderful won-derful rate the interest of this mine Adjoining t Ad-joining this is the I THE 3IATFLOWER which we might include as one with the I Silver King mine The nature of the ore is much the same and of a relative richness rich-ness Combined and with silver at honorable I hon-orable figures the Mayflower and Silver King mines as they stand today might be classed as among the very best properties in America AmericaTHE THE CRESCENT About six miles west of Park City is situated the property of the Crescent Mining company The formation is limestone lime-stone and the vein if it may be called such is about 25 feet wide Running from northwest southeast in places the vein widens to 90 feet and those great chambers of ore are quite easily worked as in the other mines of Park City Great enterprise has been shown by the owners of this property A tramway has been constructed con-structed from the mine to connect with the railroad at Park City This tramway facilitates the working of the mine The gravity fall easily brings the loaded train from the mine to the railroad TITE GLENCOE situated east of the Ontario property has lone been an ore producer of considerable importance and may be ranked with the fair mines of Park City There is run in connection with the mine a concentrator which reduces the ore of the mine into a product for transportation Of mines not at present producing great quantities of ore but which may be ranked as good property of Park City I will name the Northland the Mears Lady of the Lake Silver King Baltimore Typo Himalaya Jenette Comstock Derander Constellation Apex Rosebud Steamboat Morning Star Rosscamp Glenn group Lowell Easaloth Morey group Gem Delaware ODonovan Little Bill Creole Lucky Bill Alliance Jupiter Jupi-ter McHenry Black Diamond Parleys Park Hawkeye Park View Park City and some twenty others scattered around the great group of central mine at Park i City II AN ENTERPRISING CAMP In no camp of Utah is there greater enterprise en-terprise shown than in Park City There are established at that place large works for the reduction of ores of the Daly and Ontario mines The Marsac mill is the largest of its kind The Utah using the peculation roasters and stamp method of ore reduction and lower down the gulch almost in the heart of Park City stands the extensive reduction works known as the works of the Russell process in which the ore is treated by a chemical process which attains from the ore in a separate state the entire contents con-tents whether it be gold silver or copper It would be entering too much into detail de-tail to lay before the reader the process used in these works therefore we leave this for our more general report Along with the above works for extracting the precious metals there are the Union concentrators con-centrators engaged in the concentration of ores from the Anchor The Ontario mill is also a magnificent structure inconstant in-constant operation As I write Park City stands first among the camps of Utah Next in point of wealth producers I may place |
