Show THE GOULDS HAVE MOVED They Objected to the Heavy Taxes Assessed In New York George Gould has carried out his threat made some time ago that rather than pay an annual tax of 180000 on the personal estate x > f the Gould heirs the various members of the family would shake the dust of New York from their feet and seek residences elsewhere else-where George J Gould Edwin Gould Howard Gould and Miss Helen Gould have all filed affidavits in the office of the commissioners of taxes and assessment assess-ment to the effect that they are no longer residents oft New York city Miss Anna Gould is not yet of age but all the other heirs of Jay Goul who have reached their majority are opposed op-posed to paying the assessment upon their personal property which has been demanded by the commissioners oft of-t xes and assessment They have accordingly taken up their abiding place elsewhere than the metropolis Jay Gould in his lifetime paid taxes on only 500000 of personal property When he died and the estate went into the hands of the Surrogate a valuation of 70000000 was placed upon it and the controller collected the 5 per cent inheritance tax on that basis When I the tax commissioners made up the assessment as-sessment list in 1893 they placed a valuation of 10000000 upon the personal estate of Jay Gould in New York and George Gould as the head of the family was asked to pay taxes at that rate He declined at first to draw a check for 180000 but after ex Judge Dillon had carried the case into court and failed to have this Valuation scaled down Mr Gould paid the money under protest He said at the time that he regarded the tax as an imposition imposi-tion He was willing it was said that the estate should be assessed at a valuation of 3000000 and it is very possible that he would have been willing will-ing to pay upon an assessed valuation of 5000000 But the authorities refused re-fused to compromise upon any such basis and the original valuation 10 000000 remained on the books I Mr Gould told the commissioners at I the time that rather than submit to what he considered an unjust tax he I would remove his entire assessable per sonalty from New York city He began to do this last fall He transferred his residence on West Fortyseventh street just in the rear of the residence of the late Jay Gould to his wife and disposed of some other property he owned in the neighborhood Miss Helen Gould has not occupied the residence at the northeast corner of Fifth avenue aven-ue and Fortyseventh street for seven or eight months In her affidavit she says that she is a resident of Tarry town N Y Her brothers Edwin and Howard Gould made similar affidavits affidav-its They too are residents of Tarry town George Gould claims residence in New Jersey He has lived at Lakewood Lake-wood since last October His residence in this city like that of his sister has been closed Up since that time 3ilr George Gould is now in Europe and his sister Helen is also there Despite this counter move of the Gould family the tax commissioners have assessed the Gouli personal estate es-tate for 1894 at the old valuation10 000000 The tax list was completed early In January Taxpayers are given until May 31 to procure any changes I which they can get the commissioners to agree to Mr George Gpuld filed his affidavit in April a week or two before his departure for England and the affidavits af-fidavits 4 the other members of the family were placed on file about the same time The assssasd valtttI ion 10 000000 has not h weveri beer taJcen off the tax books and there is some probability prob-ability that the commjssjbners will sue the estate and seek to prove that the Gould family still retain their residence in this city President Barker of the board is very reticeit oh the subject and this fact is regarded as significant I signifi-cant in this connection < f o t I |
