Show I THE RUSTLERS WARm Causes that Load to the Existing Difficulties I The Situation Much Moro Threatening Even i Than is Apparent The Obverse Side of the Trouble In an Interview with several gentlemen recently returned to Salt Lake from the t north the barons side of the rustler war is gleaned To a HERALD reporter one of them said the matter is of much more serious seri-ous moment than may have been at first tIt t-It would seem that tho rustlers are composed i com-posed of a class of smaller rangemeu who have had experience in the practical workings work-ings of tho cattle business from tbe camp boy and the herder to tho cowboy and I limited stockholder Allied with these by j sympathy and interest are the small land 1 holders who are to a great extent both farmers and stockmen Out of this combination has grown a I shifty and rather numerous class who are handy with the lasso and branding iron I and energetic to tho fullest extent 1U the i line of increasing their possessions of neat footed stock The large owners of cattle and those in control of the vast ranges are nec ssarily I dependent on hired help for the manage i ri i j ment of their interests in many instances J imported from a distance and often not on friendly relations with the first class men tioned I In tho round up and on all occasions when any conflict is likely io occur the rustlers have tho advantage of the socalled barons I or their employers and come out first best I It has been discovered that one cow can suckle two calves and the second one may safely be said to be an orphan or stray from the hf1rrl nf th In nn > b uuu ue mavericii l always has that origin The depredations of the socalled rustlers covering a long period and extending beyond be-yond the point of rounding up and brand lug have reached that of frequent shipj ments to the eastern markets of larce hunches of cattle When arrested aId tried for offenses the ACQUITTALS APE SURE TO FOLLOW and it is now ascertained that even the offi cers of the several counties where the present pres-ent trouble originated are without creep tion in full accord with the rustling claas In this condition of affairs arrests are use1 loss no matter what the evidence may befor tho verdict of the jury contrary to the rule can always be determined on in advance To such an extent has the confidence of the rustlers gone they have even notified the large companies that they will hold an early roundup in May and tat the latter need not even concern themselves to tho extent of sending representatives to look after their interests To prevent wholesale losses however they will be compelled to send men to the I roundup oven if they go under a guard j and further conflicts may be anticipated S antici-pated So far public sentimept seems to havo been manufactured all on the side of the rustlers They have the ear of the coun try as well as the local authorities either as allies or intimidated so as to serve them THE PROBLEM PRESENTED is a difficult one Those owning largo herds are forced to protect thorn until such time as they can be marketed or trans ferred to some other localities and the very fact that the industry is attended with anything that smacks of bloodshed and disorder dis-order will tend to deprecate the value dieI the holdings The socalled cattle barons disavow any intention to monopolize largo ranges or to trespass upon individual rights and at the same time insist upon their right to protec tion against further depredations |
