of education mot last evening even-ing The everlasting heating and ventilating question came up and after a long and tedious tedi-ous discussion the contract for heating the Jackson school was let to the Hendey r Meyers company for 3615 hEATING AND V TILTING BIDS 4 commnication was received from Mldg ley Sons offering to install their system of heating and ventilating in the Sixteenth school house for the sum of 95075 iO and In connection with the same Mr Hensgen the contractor agrees to build the necessary flues and the Fuller ii Warren system of cremating closets and urinals and deduct from his contract the sum of 5 and to put in their system of heating and ventilating in tho Nineteenth school house for 5075 The boiler stack in each case to be furnished by the board Committee on sites and buildings SUNDRY IMPROVEMENTS ADOPTED AND AKCHI TECTs BILL AtLO WED The committee on sites and buildings reported re-ported recommending First That a gardner be appointed to take care of the Lincoln school grounds and to put in order the grounds of tho Franklin Bryant and other school grounds Second That a low fence be placed in front of the Lincoln school grounds and a close boarded fence six feet high on the remainder re-mainder of tho site ThirdThat a drinking apparatus and three slop hoppers be put in the Lincoln school and that slop hoppers be put on each floor in all school buildings FourthThat black boarding cloth be placed on the walls of the Lincoln school so that the wood work can be finished and the school prepared for occupancy as early as possible Fifth Thatthe city council be petitioned to construct a sewer lateral on Fifth South street from the Lincoln school to Fourth West street to connect with the main sewer SixthThat the Third ward school be named the Sumner school and that the Sovanth ward be called the Oquirrh school Seventh That tho bill of William Carroll Car-roll for architectural services for the Sumner Sum-ner school in the Third ward be allowed in the sum of 10 1 and that 50 per cent of of that sum be BOW appropriated as part payment thereof The report was adopted THB LIHCOL3T SCHOOL FENCE Baldwin moved to reconsider the question ques-tion of putting a fence around the Lincoln school The motion was carried and the mattor was referred to tho committee on sites and buildings BOND AND CONTRACT APPROVED Tho bond and contract of William Lister for the erection of the Sumner school in the Third ward was approved HEATING AND VENTILATING AGAIN The committee on sites and buildings recommended that the contract for the heating and ventilating of the Jackson school be awarded to the Hendey Meyer company for 3615including 25 for necessary neces-sary changes and 390 for a steam engine Pike objected to adopting the report as the work on other schools being done by these people was not progressing satisfactorily satisfac-torily Newman moved to amend by substituting substitut-ing the Smead steam system for the Hon dey Meyers system Pratt thought the Smead system was preferable but would go In for any system which the board approved of so us to get some system put in at once as it was absolutely abso-lutely necessary that the heating be put in immediately Pike moved that the report be referred back to the committee with instructions to report on all the systems which had sent in bids Motion lost Pike called for tha reading of the Smead proposition after which the motion of Mr Newman was put and lost Pike moved that the contract be awarded Midgley Li Sons for the sum of 5075 Lost Baldwin moved that the oontracd bo awarded the Smead company for 6000 on condition that they make no extra charge for the brick work6IMotion lost by a vote of 6 to 3 The motion to adopt the original report was then put and carried by a vote of 7 to 2 thus awarding the contract to the Hendey Meyers company for 3615 THE SMBAD SANITATION SYSTEM The committee on sites and buildings recommended that the contractor be authorized au-thorized to substitute the Smead system of cremating glosati In the Jackson school and that difference in cost t19 be deducted de-ducted from his contract Laid on the table BRICK TS BUBBLE BOOK The committee on sites and buildings recommended that the interior walls of the basement of the Jacks school be built of good hard brick instead of rubble rock provided that it be done by the contractor without additional expanse Adopted JANITORS APPOINTED The committee on furniture and supplies reported having appointed janitors as follows fol-lows John ODonnell for building on Sixth street at 15 a month Francis Ed munds Tenth ward vestry room at 15 a month William Fowler vestry room in Twentieth ward at 15 a month and T E Harris of thehl h school at a per month also that they had rented a large room on Richards avenue from J S Richards at 25 a month in which to store the car load of school furniture just received and recommend recom-mend that the room be kept constantly for that purpose The report was adopted with the exception of that part referring to the janitor of the high school there being some discrepancy in the names it being understood that Lee was the name of the man appointed and not Harris This portion of the report was referred back FARMING OUT SOT PERMITTED The committee on furniture and supplies recommended that J B Bloomfield the janitor of the Tenth school be removed because ho did not attend to the duties himself but sublet the position The committee com-mittee also recommended that Mr Meian der be appointed in his place at a salary of 50 S month Adopted NEWTBACHERS ENGAGED Superintendent Millspaugh reported the engagement of the following teachers Mrs A J Gunnelt first school at 70 per month MidS Emma Tibbets fifteenth school vice Miss Hal at 170 per month Miss Emma Whitney eleventh school vice Miss Kubn at 75 per month The committee com-mittee on teachers recommended that the engagements be confirmed Adopted SCARLET FEVER CLOSES A SCHOOL Superintendent Millspaugh reported that he had discontinued the primary department depart-ment of thirteenth fe school on account of the existence of scarlet fever in the IIw st end of the boarding house adjoining the grounds of the school reasonable prudence I pru-dence seeming to call for such motion Adopted APPROPRIATIONS Appropriations to the amount of 3 62940 were made COLTJMBU3 DAY Newman asked what part the board was expected take in the Columbian celebration celebra-tion today Baldwin said the mombors were all expected ex-pected to be present at the tabernacle where they would be strictly in it a the children celebration was under the auspices of the board Anumber of less distinguished citizens had also been invited in-vited to attend Board adjourned for one week |
