Show DOWN AN ELEVATOR James Edwards Falls Two Plights 1 Through a Death Trap This Time I Was the Walker Bank Building Build-ing That Caiuht a Victim Ho Will Kecovcr Another serious accident is to be added to the long list of fatalities resulting from the carelessness with which elevators are managed There is a fearful expenditure of life and limb in the attempt to modernize modern-ize old buildings and to adopt the appliances appli-ances of swift locomotion When a square hole is cut through the floors of a building it requires the most zealous cnre to guard the deadly openings from the intrusion of men who half the time walk with their eyes to the ceiling little thinking tbat they may be stepping into a death hole The latest victim was James Edwards who keeps a small store on or near Twelfth East street He is an elderly man nearing the seventies Yesterday afternoon after-noon he had occasion to call at the office of Dr Hicks who has a suit of rooms at the landing of the fine old walnut stairway that leads to the second story I of the Walker bank building at I Second South and Main street The door to the doctors private office is just beyond a blind elevator which is closed with a pair of panel doors and to all outward appearances might be taken for a closet There are bolts at the top and bottom and a new lock with a doorknob door-knob at the middle The janitor states that the key had been lost and that the door was unlocked but that he was always careful to fasten the top and bottom bolts Anyway Mr Edwards evidently mis tog the elevator door for the one leading into Dr Hicks office and losing his balance bal-ance fell two Sights lauding on tho cage which was standing in the basement He was carried into Hovers drug store and Drs Hicks and McLean came to his relief I was found that there was a fracture of the bones ot the right fore arm and a compound com-pound dislocation of the left foro finger ihe flesh was torn loose on his lingers and his hands badly bruised The lacerated condition of his hands is believed to have been caused by bis trying to savo himself by clutching to tho wire rope that is used for hoisting tho elevator and this may I have saved his life Mr Edwards though well along In years has a young wife and a teenmontbsold bbUnless Unless ho has suffered some internal injuries in-juries he will soon recover |
