| Show The Commission and tho Home One of the duties onerous imposed upon that overworked body 1 the Utah commission com-mission is to act as a board of management manage-ment and control of the Womens Industrial In-dustrial Christian Home association in I this city The commission has submitted its annual report to the House of Representatives Repre-sentatives The making of this report whichis a Very brief document is about the sum of its labors in managing the association as-sociation as the ladies in charge relieve the commission of any other practical duties The sum and substance of the report is to the effect that while the institution has not been as successful as was hoped for by its friends it has been a good work for such as have accepted of its hos pitality and that the opinion expressed by those who plead for its continuation should receive serious consideration No definite recommendation is made by the politic commission The expenses for the year have aggregated aggre-gated 399533 This taken from the annual an-nual appropriation of i000 leaves a balance bal-ance in hand of f467 The average num ber of inmates during the year has been 20 that is from 5 to 18 women and from 12 to 15 children Whether this includes the help and the matron does not appear ap-pear The matrons report furnishes the statistics sta-tistics also the arguments for further appropriations ap-propriations and the continuance of the Home It is urged that it has been J v r l e If k > strenuously and persistently opposed by the Mormon church that if its true that polygamy is dead the greater num j her will need its benefits that there are i j values that money can neither valqe nor purchase and this is one of them j To emphasize this it is stated that two young women aged 18 and 20 and also third wife with a baby have recently re-cently been received It is not claimed that the young women were married at all All these particulars are from the report of the officers of the institution appended to the report of the commission commis-sion sionThe The truth is the whole concern is a failure fail-ure and it is something worse than folly to try to make it appear otherwise No utterance of the Mormon church can be found in opposition to the Home if it could that would be ro reason fontS continuance con-tinuance as amonument Congressional ignorance of the Utah situation and of the useless expenditure of public funds What a wonderful event was the advent of a third wife with a baby in arms It was no doubt viewed in the nature of a godsend to those who are pecuniarily interested in the continuance of the Home The values that money cannot can-not purchase are not to be found in that institution and Congress would do well to consider the advisability of its transfer to some useful public purpose or of turning it over to the new state hospital or other charitable institution That the Home project was a fizzle from the beginning is admitted by all truthful persons who pay any attention to the matter |
