Show DOT BELIEVE IT Local Officers PoohPooh the GouldSage Story I THE MUDDLE ANENT THE SALTAIR It Will Probably be Settled at the Council Meeting this Evening An Accident Acci-dent by a Reporter The Union Pacific people in this city take but little stock in the stories wierd from the east that Jay Gould and Russell Sage ire to be retired from the Union Pacific directory nevertheless they are anxiously awaiting developments of the annual meeting meet-ing of the 27th instant Concerning the reported re-ported change of management the Western Railway says The Union Pacific under the Gould management seems to have been doing very well considering the great depression of business that has prevailed pre-vailed since Mr Gould identified himself him-self with the road To an outsider it would seem that It has been operated with great economy and tho interests of the stockholders have been well taken care of while the patrons have had no cause for serious complaint Unless the Yanderbilts have secured the control and wish to operate op-erate it as a part of their system there seems to be no cause for any of the stockholders stock-holders to desire a change in management It might not do the Union Paoific any harm to try the experiment of operating it for a few years without a change of management manage-ment every twelve months The Company Wasnt Responsible hI understand remarked the polite reporter re-porter to the manager of a railway noted for the unpunctuahty of its trains that there was an accident on your railway last night hOh do you was the sarcastic reply Yes sir Do you know anything about itl Only that it happened to the train which was due here at 815 That train came in to the minute sir said the manager firmly Are you sure of that Of course I am Thanks That must have been the accident ac-cident referred to and the reporter dodged out safely Exchange The Saltair Muddle There seems to be good reason to believe that the Saltair muddle will be settled at the meeting of the council this evening it was said by one of the councilors yesterday that enough votes had been secured to adopt Wantlands resolution authorizing the Saltair company to lay its track on the north side of the Union Pacific rails providing pro-viding the company would give bonds to remove its track to the south just as soon as the Union Pacific removed asit has been notlned to do There Is no doubt said the councilor that it will be but a short time before tho Union Pacific is broadgauged to the lake At the latest the work will be done the coming fall or early in the spring This being the fact It would be asking almost too much to compel the Union Pacific to go to the expense of moving mov-ing the narrowguage The fight that has been made and is being made is simply preventing pre-venting the investment of a large sum of money and there is no sense to It That the road will be built on South Temple there can be no doubt it might just as well be understood now An Electric Locomotive There is on exhibition in the office of the Salt Lake City Railway company a photograph photo-graph of the ThomsonHouston electric locomotive which is used for switching purposes in the yards of the Michigan Central railway It is built on the overhead over-head system and is said to do very good work Personal and G neral General Passenger Agent Bennett of the Rio Grando Western was at Hot Springs Arkansas yesterday General Freight Agent Babcock returns this morning from Denver where he has been in the interest of the Rio Grando Western The Salt Lake and Park City delegation I of the Sons of St George went over tho Rio Grande Western to Ogden yesterday to celebrate at the Junction city It is understood that the excursion rates for the Knight Templera at Denver in August will be about 20 to Salt Lake and returnthus inabllng the guests to visit tho lako and take a bath after the dusty sojourn east of the range Mr W H Firth of Denver general passenger pas-senger agent of the Chicago Rock Island is in the city looking after the interests of his company Ho announces that be inning in-ning wiih tomorrow his company will put on through Pullman cars over the Rio Grande Western to Chicago Also thut from and after May 1 they will run a now train from Colorado Springs leaving thereat there-at S a m and reaching Chicago at 4 p m next day in time to connect with all the fast trains for the east The cars are being specially built for this service and include the sleeper composite and dining cars of I the most approved style |
